Updating from an older system advice

Hi Guys,

I'm currently running an i7 920 w/ 6Gb ram, 6850HD, Corsair 750W PSU. System has some age on it now. About 6 years or so. VGA has been updated once. I'm looking to either upgrade this system or build new. Building new doesn't appear to get me much unless I'm going to be going high end, which I don't plan on doing.

There's no reason for me to expect my system to blow up tomorrow, but certainly it could. It's been running fine for the last few years and does what I need it to just fine. Age is my main concern. A little better performance wouldn't hurt either.

Most of what I've looked at have been mostly lateral upgrades from the 920. I've looked at the fx-8350, fx-6300. The i5's are a tad bit more than I'd like to spend. upgrading the VGA is pretty straightforward at this point. I'm considering the 270x 4Gb version and considering upping the ram to 8Gb.

Looking for some advice on what would be an appropriate course of action. My budget is in the 600ish range. Don't need a case.

IMO, if you aren't ready to go to a new i5, the is no need for a CPU upgrade. A video card is a good idea as it would carry over. Some more RAM would be a good idea, and an SSD if you don't have one.

I would say go with a GPU and RAM upgrade although with a $600 ish budget I wouldn't go with a 270X as there are better performance improvements that still keep you well within budget. I'd look at purchasing either a GTX 970 or a R9 290 if you want to keep the price of the upgrade low. Not sure how much RAM to go up to in all honesty since a use case hasn't really been stated. If you do a lot of video editing or other tasks that are RAM heavy going to 16 GB of RAM wouldn't be a bad idea though. Lastly an SSD would be another item that would carry over to another build, I might actually priorititize it over RAM depending on how you use your system, a nice 250 GB SSD such as the Crucial MX100 would combo nicely with a GPU upgrade and come well within budget.
 
6 years old mobo.don't put a new cpu on it.as mention above upgrading the ram the gpu and also a ssd will make a big change.

What are you looking for your system to perform better at?

If you're talking about gaming, I would not consider spending money going to the FX cpus, that's at best a sidegrade. A gpu upgrade (and possibly a PSU refresh depending on age) would be a much better use of your funds.
 
I can currently run the games I play at high to very high around 50-60 frames. Other than that just browsing some movies. Kinda thinking of just holding my money for now, let it blow up, and start over with all brand new parts.

Not a bad idea at all. The longer it lasts, the better upgrade you will get for the money!

Agree. If you already get 60 FPS in the games you care about and at the settings you care about, there's very little reason to upgrade. Let it ride until you run into something your current system can't handle.

It's not necessary I imagine, but MOST Mobos that will run a 920 you could upgrade to a X5650 for about $80 for a used chip.

I'd say an SSD for would be good if not one in there, more than anything.

You seem to be running pretty good as is, sitting on it and saving up might be best bet atm.
