updating flash prom on an ultra5 w/openbsd?

i've followed the following:

http://sunsolve.sun.com/search...121&toDocument=yes

however, things aren't working.

i'm getting the following error:

Rebooting with command: boot disk:0a /flash-update-Ultra510-latest
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/disk@0,0:0a File and args: /flash-update-Ultra510-latest
OpenBSD IEEE 1275 Bootblock 1.1
..>> OpenBSD 3.5 (obj) #0: Mon Mar 29 12:00:16 MST 2004
deraadt@sparc64.openbsd.org:/usr/src/sys/arch/sparc64/stand/ofwboot/obj
unknown executable format

Boot:

any ideas how to resolve this?

I've never done it on OpenBSD. I still had Solaris around at the time...

I wonder if you could put build a bootable Solaris cd with the file...

btw, how come you're not asleep?

No I don't believe it exists. I was wondering if just putting the file on cd and trying to update from that would be possible though. I chickened out and installed Solaris. 😱

I work nights now.

do i really need to update the prom? i mean i was able to install obsd w/o a hitch. will the update improve performace in any way?

Not sure. There are usually release notes of some sort. I had to update it because OpenBSD wouldn't install...

Not sure here either, but to me is sound like corrupt file, did it match the MD5 sum, i can make an extraction of what i have installed as a backup but i wouldn't fiddle with it without probllems with newer hardware

Do you have any need for the fixes?

Many people n0c included contribute to the current by submitting bugs and bug fixes, documentation of them and code. Sonetimes it helps, sometimes it makes it more confusing, it you have a problen with your current Sparc prom please submit the version of your prom and last known prgram date.

If that is not what you want to and your system runs fine then just DON'T fix what is not broken.

I know only two things, it is not a security related update AND it is not reiqired tot run Open just fine *pats box*

Holy hell batman!

It's an old update too (2002). So it might just be important... Makes me wish I had my Ultra10 around to test out. But I guess DHCP's working for me since I was netbooting the thing (the /export drive died recently though :|).

And I've never found a bug in -current, so no bug reports. One of my docs did make it on deadly.org back in the day, and got torn apart. 🙁

No sparc left huh. 😉 not to worry, i can tell you that DHCP works fine with and without the update.

Guess we will just have to wait until he responds, it culd very well be a corrupt or the wrong file.

I've got 4 sun machines, but no space for them. The apartment I live in is small. The sun machines are loud too... Although, I guess I could stick the U1 in the closet or something... 😛

I have copies on atleast 1 desktop, but probably 2 (one of which is off). I also have them on the iBook, Powerbook, and a USB memory stick thing. I've ot copies of some of them (mostly older versions) on my website, and possibly on a shell account I've got too. There are copies of some of them on here and possibly bsdforums too (I should probably log into that site this month...). Eventually I'll get around to putting them on cd too.

So I think the whole backup thing is fine at the moment. 😉

People are encouraged to ask me for specific things, although I reserve the right to be abusive. I also encourage people to spread some of the docs around where appropriate. 😉

Hahaaa, was that a hint that i shold spend more time in OS? I know i have been slacking lately but well, a lot of things to do and then we started talking about kinky sfuff and i got carried a way.

To be honest, i am as drunk as a skunk, the JD went in when the wench wnet out.

Anayway, you should assemble your doc's i have seen then around before and searched for it more than once, sometimes a small reminder helps a lot more then a big manual page. 😉

I think we should leave it to drag to do the step by step, he does it so well.

Why he is not elite by now i will never know.

That's a project "in the works" at the moment. It's kind of on the back burner though. I keep meaning to update the docs page on my website, but I forget when I have the time. 😱 Maybe when I get home. Maybe not.

There's atleast one more project "in the works," but it's also on the back burner. I need to stop goofing off so much, and actually get around to doing my school work. 😛

EDIT: I don't know why drag isn't elite yet. I've started atleast one thread about it in FI. It got locked along with the rest. I like his posts, except for the constant spelling mistakes. 😛 But I'd definitely love comments from him and others on anything I've written, and I'm definitely willing to help out anyone else that wants it. 😉

I know exactly what you mean with the "in the works" projects, 😉

I have been into at least two FI threads promoting drag, i think both of them were yours but i could be wrong (it has happened once before).

I know you are n0c, actyally, the docs in your sig was part of why i stuck around. 😉 that and this forum, i read alot here but i have no real knowledge of win systems and more often than not you guys have already answered the other posts, at times, such as this, i can probably contribute though. 🙂

If you hang out often enough, you can usually find something worth while to contribute. The windows stuff I try to avoid, but I've read enough threads out of interest that I have picked up a little bit here and there. 😉

Just a silly thought, xyyz, you have switched the jumper to allow you to write a new firmware right? It's one of the silly things I'm sure I missed my first time around. 😉

Problem is that i have docs to write and systems to do followups on, testing and so on, so i am usually not here, i think i work too damn much when i am at home and a lot less when i am at work heh.

I will stick around in this forum though, if i find a thead where i can help out i will. 🙂

otherwise i will just be promoting Slackware over Debian ruthlessly!

If he hasn't then I will feel silly, but would that produce the error message "not an executable file format"?

the boot block seemed to boot up fine, i still think his update is corrupt.

165% of the time that is the error. 😛

Yeah, I don't know what kind of error it would produce. I am guessing the update is corrupt, or for some reason it can't be run from an OpenBSD partition (unlikely). But wanted to think of other things to check just in case.

I actually think i have done this on a Sparc running Open, but i am not absolutely sure, it would surprise me if it was something that actually makes it non-solvable.

I don't think i am going to sleep for a while so i will check the thread when i am at this computer.

Sleep well in the upper bunk bed. 😉

ah here's where the thread went.

as for what's going on... i was able to install OBSD w/o and issues. i dunno what it is. i just like to have the latest firmware/bios blah on my systems.

someone on ars mentioned something to the effect of... the sparc machine not being able to read a file on a FS it doesn't recognize.

i could install 2.6 on the machine and then upgrade that way, but that's a bitch and a half. i hated it when i had to do it that way with my ultra 1 and my ultra 2. it's funny that i didn't need to do it with my AXi based system. that firmware can be loaded right from the OS, and i think it's OS independant.

as for the sparcs being loud? what's up with that? my U1 is as quiet as a mouse and this U5 is even quieter than that. but then, I guess any noise would be offset by the loud fan pumping air outta the garage.

BTW. i'm a by the book player... so i read the sun instructions and when it said power off your comp, crack the case and change the jumpers, i did so.

Maybe you could throw a different hard disk in there, boot from the solaris cd, make a partition on the disk, and use that without a copy of Solaris on there. Might be more trouble than it's worth though. 😛

I have an update fear, I don't update BIOSes or firmwares unless there is a good reason. If it works, I leave it alone. 😉

The two x86 machines I'm using at the moment are near silent. I love it. I shut down the scsi machine because the drive was bothering me. 😱 I've been spoiled. 😉

And the jumper thing wasn't meant as an insult or anything. Just have to ask the silly questions too. 🙂
