Updating Eclair to Froyo on a Samsung phone

How does one do it? Samsung Kies is not working on my phone, and I don't trust guides on Youtube.

Which phone?

If it's a recent (Galaxy S) model, there should be a full package you can flash with Odin (pc) or Heimdall (linux/mac) on XDA or another site. It will erase EVERYTHING though. You can often also find the OTA update.zip that the carrier sent to incrementally update (no-wipe).
