Right Click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup & Shutdown, uncheck the auto-restart feature.

Also in there, switch to Mini or Small dumps. You may need to reboot.

Ensure that your pagefile is on C: (look in the root of your C: drive and you should see it if you are viewing all files and have no hidden files).

If it crashes again, you should now get a blue screen. You will also get a c:\windows\minidump\(somename).dmp. Zip & mail me the *.dmp files to bluescreens at comcast.net and I'll try to see what's going on. No promises, but I'll look.

Is your pagefile on C: ? When you view go to Explorer's Tools / View All Files option (so you're viewing all files) you should be able to see the pagefile.sys on c:.

Do you have any DMP files with the date of the crash on them? If so sure, send it.

And you choose to show System files too? There are two checkboxes; both must be unchecked - we don't want to hide anything.

Anyway, do you have dump files with the date of the crash on them in c:\windows\minidumps?

Check the powersupply (if it's namebrand, wattage, etc). Crashing games can be caused by a number of things including memory errors, overheating, video card issues, or psu.

Mini072004-01.dmp dump was caused by smwdm.sys, which is related to your audio driver, typically from analog devices / soundmax. This file is from Dec 19 2002. Replace the file by updating the audio driver or trying out a new audio card.

Mini071604-02.dmp - Same.

Mini071604-01.dmp - Same.

Mini071404-02.dmp - Same.

Mini071404-01.dmp - Same.

That's as far as I went. I suspect you should try to disable the sound card in your BIOS (I'm assuming it's the built-in sound card) and then uninstall the driver (add-remove control panel) and then see if the errors persist. If they do, send me the new dump. No need to send any older dumps.

Also, your navap.sys is ancient history - 1999. Update your Norton programs. That's the Symantec AV Realtime Protection; it's old. I see you have newer Norton's AV programs in there, so I'm not sure why you're running such an old navap.dll file.

If you're running Alcohol 120%, upgrade to the latest version. That's just a guess, based on where I found an old DLL. Neither this nor navap.sys caused the crash.

Anyway, disable the audio card, uninstall the drivers, and try again to cause the failure, and mail me the resulting .dmp if you get one.

If you are able to do so, check the temperature of your cpu via your motherboard. It could be a heat related issue causing the lockups.

hey thanks so much for ur guys' help. i will try to delete old programs and update alcohol as well....i hope its not the soundcard because i dont feel like buying one......i was just looking through my pc case "custom made" and i found out that my power supply is antec 300 watts. im not really an expert on watts but is this low or high for my type of computer?

MSI 875 motherboard

radeon 9500
sound max 5.1
512mb ram
30 gig maxtor
3 fans

but i will try the soundcard....thanks!

hey i tried to uninstall my sound card and it does work. but im not really sure if thats the problem because i've upgraded to the latest driver for soundmax. is there a possibility that the power supply didnt put enough JUICe to the soundcard to cause it to fail? im just leaning towards the power supply because although my computer isn't the highest end type anymore.......it still uses a lot to run the latest games today

i have SL300s power supply

oh yea one more thing is that i also had to lower my agp to 4x rather than 8x and my cpu is clocked at default.......the second i over clock the computer or bring it to 8x games tend to freeze more often.....i tried to play WITH sound however wit agp at 4x and it only freezes maybe once every 1-2 hours. does that sound like power supply?

I think the entire power supply bit is silly and horribly overblown, but that's just my humble opinion.

Take a look at those tiny Shuttle-style boxes. They have 180w-225w PSs, and people load them with RAM, HDDs, CDROMs, and Radeon 9800s without issue; you're running considerably less than that (the 9500 is what you've got, otherwise you've got a similar setup - the 9500 doesn't chew thru power like the 9800 does) and you've got 50-75% more power. So no, I didn't think it's the power supply, even before I looked at the dump. After I looked at the dump, I knew it wasn't the power supply.

Anyway, the dump clearly states that the sound card driver caused the issue. It's definitive - that's what the dump says.

The latest driver may be buggy. :) It's happened before. It could conflict with another kernel-level driver you have.

BTW, I noticed you had a firewall product on the box that caused crashes left and right until you removed it. That was another 3-4 of the minidumps you sent - older ones.

When you normally clock it, does it freeze? If so, send me the dump, and I'll tell you what caused the issue.

Really - there's no guessing here. Just send that dump, and I'll tell you. :)

The date is clearly indicated on the dump file - just look at the file and you'll see what the date and time are, and from there you can see if it is a new dump or an old dump.

You can delete the old dumps from the minidump directory; you don't need those.

Questions are fine.

The 2-3 dumps prior to the ones I listed above show that a firewall software device driver was bringing down the box - it happened several times in a row, and I assumed you'd uninstalled the device driver to remove the problem. I don't have the dump in front of me so I forget the brand, but that was clear too.
