Updating Classic Old Games

Strange how one thread leads to another . . .

In my last thread re: RPG&RTS vs. FPS, several posters suggested System Shock 2. i objected to the dated gfx and alm4rr suggested going "to www.ttlg.com and you can download updated textures, characters, etc. . . . everything made new."

Now my experience with updated gfx exists solely with the original HL - where an exp pak updated the HL engine and with DE:IW. HL's gfx "update' wasn't that good - certainly not enough to warrant another replay and DE:IW's choked my system and the gfx is certainly 'good enough' anyway.

i am stuck on dial-up and can't d/l everything i'd like . . . . i guess Quake i is getting a facelife . . . frankly, with FC, HL2, Diii, PK/BoOH, Riddick, Thief-DS, etc. i am "spoiled" and have trouble enjoying anything more primitive than Quake III.

What old games have you replayed BECAUSE the gfx engine was updated very well or a Mod that was so good it "changed" the original?

Personally, i'd like to see the original DeuSex brought up to DE:IW's gfx standards. ;)
:)

EDIT: WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR is an older classic game that is SO MODified or GFX so UPdated that it is worth replaying just for that modification

i cant help u with that specifically :) But i do have a (brilliant) suggestion...go back and play all those games u had 2-4 years ago that u couldn't run with everything maxxed out...maxxed out on ur shiny new rig (if u have one)

It certainly put a smile on my face running Driver at max res with 8xAA/16AF :) NFS hot pursuit2/Colin McRea rally2/GTA 3 etc with all the eye candy crankin ne one?

done that :)

you know, i really haven't thought of "mods". Generally, i finish a game and just put it away (after replaying it right away if it is worthy). i often hear of mods . . . . take Max Payne . . . . there were some great mods 'promised' but the promises rarely are fulfilled and IF they are, by the time they are complete the sequel is out with much bette gfx.

i HAVE replayed EVERYTHING worth replaying when i upgraded my r8500 to 9800xt ten months ago. . . . i got to see more eyecandy with Unreal II to replaying some of Thief-DS/DE:IW and getting the awesome 'bloom' and lighting and shadows effect.

WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR is an older classic game that is SO MODified or GFX so UPdated that it is worth replaying just for that modification. ;)

i tried a similar thread a couple of years ago
(when in doubt, "recycle") . . . .

evidently there just aren't many good mods or worthwhile gfx engine updates
(or ATers aren't 'into' them)

Quake1, CS and EQ are the only games that I've ever played that got graphic makeovers. IIRC

DOOM :D

Get EDGE and start messing around with the scripts, weapons code ... it's loads of fun. I need to fire that up again.

no thanks! . . . not my forte

i'd much rather play mods than create them - its "work" . . . . i just haven't found any (other than the 'big 3') that are "complete" and "bug-free" or even up-to-date.

Theres a mod to run bulders gate with the bg2 engine. Sorry no link but it was still available about a month ago. I played it a bit for kicks... but I've played bg soooo many times.

I know that you were talking about PC games, but there are a couple of arcade game emulators, that support replacement graphics tile sets for an "enhanced" look too. I thought that I would mention them, they might be fun to mess with when you get tired of the PC games.

Are you referring to MAME? i used to play around with that . . . .

but there are SO MANY good PC games if i retired now and devoted the rest of my life to finishing them . . . . i probably couldn't . . . . that's why i set my gfx bar so high. ;)

thanks, all

If you use the Aleph One emulator, there are a few various graphics updates for The Marathon Trilogy. However, I'm not sure if you'd still enjoy them, considering most enhance the 94/95 quality graphics (low-resolution textures with sprites) to about 97/98 quality (average-resolution textures with blocky models). The game is excellent regardless of graphical updates though.

i was just going to say marathon... i think that game still has the best pistol ever made (as far as the model goes).. i'd love to see that game updated

The re-make of Spy Hunger (Xbox & PS2, maybe PC also?) is pretty good. Totally different 20 years later, of course, but still good. :)

I might have to check that out. I love that game.

'Go for the eye's boo! Go for the eye's!"

Planescape: Torment would be cool with a graphics update. Even just a higher resolution would be cool. Best RPG of all time IMO.

I've heard the remake of Sid Meier's Pirates! is pretty good.

is it a completely brand new game or a REmake except for gfx game . . . .

i think it would be awesome if they would simply remake some classics by completely updating the gfx/physics/audio engines but leaving the gameplay alone and perhaps adding a few new levels like an expansion pack and then charge for a "new" game.

it seems like it would be easier than completely making a brand new game from scratch. . . .

Do you mean the arcade game Spy Hunter? is it even on PC?
(more like 30 years) :p

BTW, the Demo for System Shock 2 i linked to won't setup on Win2K ("corrupt cab file") . . . . so it'll be awhile before i either setup Win98SE on a partition or workaround.

Yep, did it with SS2. The "mods" I used were increased screen resolution and texture paks that made the characters/monsters look better than original.

I think it would still look pretty dated after FC etc. though

did you workaround to play on XP or use win98SE?

The original GFX is '99 . . . . just like Thief (gag) . . . . . i am guessing updated SS2 looks between HL's (1) and DE's gfx . . . . i only looked at a couple of screen shots . . . . the 'after' is definitely better than the 'before'.

KoTOr 2 looks to be so buggy, i am gonna get and play (the original) KoTOR . . . . after all, the GFX are the "same" and it's patched plus is only $20 . . . . in the meantime, i will look for System Shock 2. :)

By then - if i like it - KoTOR 2 will be bargain bin. ;)
(patched too)

Pirates is exactly the same game with 2 substancial additions to gameplay - the dancing and sneaking minigames...they also threw in the jesuits and indian settlements but these aren't very important

the land battles play differently, but it is MUCH better this time around...

all in all, it plays exactly like the old one except major graphics update.

I, and others in my family, really like KoTOR (original). I went after every side quest I could. I paid top dollar for it and felt it was well the $. :)

I'm winding down on PK + BOoH. Either gonna play far Cry again or get Chronicals of Riddick.

Everyone/most would prolly say HL2. But I'm wary of steam, my gaming rig is free standing (no BB connection) so the required connection is a hassle, its still pricey, and I wasn't all that impressed with the original HL. I played it after Deus Ex and SS2. For me anyway, it wasn't nearly as good as those.

Fern

BTW, SS2 starts out pretty d@mn fast. For me its a real heart thumper. Graphics, shmaphics, I was so absorbed in the gameplay I didn't notice.
