*EDIT*: Oops... It was me. As much as it pains me to admit it, I feel that I have to say that I messed up. Wouldn't you know that I recently did an upgrade to my sons PC. Wouldn't you know that HE has a Netgear WG111V2, my daughter on the other hand has a WG111. Yep, hers isn't a V2. The killer is, that inside the 'about' tab of the netgear software under the 'Hardware Version', it shows her adapter as 'Rev. 2'. D'oh... I had seen my sons V2 and somehow crossed it in my mind that hers was a V2. It's not. Apparently even the V1 had at least 2 Revisions. For what it is worth, there is a V3 of this style adapter also. I swear that from now on I will verify each and every piece.
I had found my error when I decided to swap my daughters adapter into my sons PC. I knew that the MAC address would be different, but I figured that perhaps it happened to break at the same time I was doing the software update. However rare I thought it could be I decided to verify that the hardware (adapter) was working, so that I could focus on the software (program). Once I plugged her adapter into his PC and his program closed, I started comparing the 2 adapters and saw the small marking of V2 that was on my sons wasn't on my daughters.
Original Post:
My Daughter stayed over a friends house last night. I am off on vacation this week. I figured that would be the perfect time for me to 'tinker' with her PC. I have a Wireless Network with a Netgear WG8614 V5 router. Both my daughter and my sons PCs connect using Wireless WG111 V2 USB connectors. I remember having troubles in the past, and that should have been enough to keep me away.
My daughters Netgear program was from a few years ago, while my sons says it is from Dec '07. I figured that I would just update her software since my sons PC is using it and it seems to be fine. I went to Netgear and navigated to the WG111 V2 download page. I chose the most recent version 3.4.0 and downloaded it (on her PC before I removed anything). I deleted the existing program and tried installing the new one. Well, it hangs during the install. Right after where it says to install the USB device and press 'next'. I tried it over and over using different versions (older ones) and did the future downloads on my sons and my PCs. I also have shutdown, rebooted, etc... between installs.
I am just aggravated to all hell at the moment. I figured that I would walk away and take a breather before I got angry enough to break something. So, I came here to post and vent and ask if someone knew of an issue or fix.
I did a google search for a WG111 V2 driver but can't find one that is separate. I am willing to forget about using the Netgear software at this point. If I could just get a separate driver, I'd let Windows manage the wireless network on her PC. If anyone knows of a separate driver or a version of that Netgear program that works well, please let me know.
-Thanks, Ken
