Currently you can change sensitivity from 0 to 10 with 0.5 step increase meaning you have 20 levels of sensitivity whereas logitech has only three - 1600/800/400. I don't have 518, but I can say that on my DB the difference between 0/5/10 settings is too great to be anything uselfull. You NEED intermideate settings which logitech fails to provide.

Wrong.....with the MX518 you can customize 5 different settings in increnments of 50 up to 1600.

and what do you mean by Intermideate settings?

When I said intermediate I meant sensitivity levels in between those three (or five as you claim) levels. The reviews I've read stated 518 could only change between those three settings I listed - 400/800/1600. Are you speaking from first hand experience or did you just read it somewhere? Can you adjust those five levels (say set them to 50-100-110-1200-1210) or are they predefined?

The MX line is out of the question for me (way too big for my hands!) Guess I'll wait till amazon.ca stocks the new plasma version ... since i'm paying $50 CDN for a mouse, might as well be the best one out there. :)

Yes I am positive.... here is a screenshot of the MX518 advanced game options settings...

http://server5.theimagehosting.com/image.php?img=lmouse.JPG

and yes you can adjust those to what levels you want... which still makes me wonder what to get....

I believe this is how the on-the-fly is different between the Razer and MX518:

MX518 = Change Hardware DPI
Razer = Change Sensitivity but always stays at 1600 DPI (cannot change DPI)

Hm... Well, it's better than I thought then. Razer has 20 levels, but they are non-adjustable. I suppose it depends on situation which one is better. Razer is better if you still don't know which sensitivity level is best for you since you can adjust it via small steps, but on the other hand if you already know what's best for you and want to go fron 1600 to 800 in one flick of the button - well, you cannot do that with razer - here 518 would be better.

The Razer my have 20 levels, but I do not believe these levels adjust the DPI. I believe they just adjust the software sensitivity.

Any good gamer will choose the dpi and set his/her sensitivity accordingly.

If you think you need "on the fly dpi" adjustments you are crazy.

Forgot to say that it all boils down to size preference. I personally liked my mx310 better than my mx500/510 simply due to size.

If they ever cram the internals of the 518 into a smaller version Id try that too but right now Razer has the only "small" mouse with its features.

I have an MX510 and MX518. There is no noticable difference in games or desktop apps alike. There may be internal differences, but all I can tell is the MX518 looks cooler (than my red MX510) and costs more :\

why is dpi adjustment so important? Windows has adjustments and just about any game has adjustments. Why is it important to do it on the mouse?

Well im not saying its important to do it on the mouse, but if your always stuck at 1600 dpi its going to be super super sensitive and some people might want to customize their DPI.

Adjustment is important because you can set whatever level is convenient for you. But what you probably meant to ask why do we need high dpi mice. Well, because not all mice are sensitive enough, I for example own wireless intellimouse and even with the sensitivity set to its highest level, the mouse still isn't fast enough for me. Sad but true. My logitech BJ58 mouse also has sensitivity glider set to the highest possible sensitivity level and it's about right (although still a little slow for me).

If you don't mind paying +50 for this mouse then you might want to consider, gogamer.com, They sell them for $59.90 on their website(plus 5.99 shipping), but if you go through amazon you can order them for $52.90(plus $4.99 standard shipping), plus they didn't charge me tax in CA, since it's through Amazon. :) I'm guessing they would normally charge tax to CA since the gogamer is located in CA. Total for me was $57.89 shipped. According to gogamer these items are in stock and ship within 24hrs.

I definately needed a new mouse since I've been using my MS intellimouse optical since what 2000/2001, around there, haha ;)

oh and according to the Razer website, they've already stopped producing these plasma ltd. edition diamondbacks, so I'm guessing the price will just continue to go higher as quantities diminish at stores.

edit: tiger direct still has it listed for $49.99, but UPS ground shipping was +$11, so that kind of kills the slightly lower price. Also not sure if it is in stock. Title says "preorder", but availability says "available while supplies last".

I got mine too, upgraded from a MX900, not sure what the DPI is on it, assuming 800? This mouse OWNS. Razer's web site has some Flash intro talking about the new mouse they'll be releasing soon. I gotta say besides how amazingly smooth and accurate this mouse is. It's beautiful, no LED on the underside is weird, I'm so use to picking up my Logitech's and having the red beams shoot out.

paid $66 shipped off Newegg, gonna order a 2nd one tonight, seeing how they're very limited (5000 I heard) I want a back up if this one fails :D
