I wanted to build a computer and bought a computer case with 400 W power supply. I got a good deal on a HP computer and dropped the idea of building a computer. I sold the case with the power supply to someone here in the school a month ago. I gave it to him brand new in an unopened, manufacturer sealed box. He opened the box right before me to see if it has everything. He was satisfied and paid me $43. He sent me the following e-mail today. What do you guys think I should do?

I bought a silver case from you a while back, and just now got the
chance to do anything with it, unfortunatly the power supply is bad.
What I want to know is if you have a good 400watt that you would trade
for this bad one. I think it's the least you could do considering that
while looking around for some documentation, I found this same box and
PS for about $10 less than our price. Please contact me as soon as you
can. Thank you.
Update:1 I sent him mail saying that I sold him a new, manufacturer sealed case and I cannot take it back since it is over a month.
Update:2 - He sent me this today
I looked at the link to the cheap power supply and it won't be a
comparable replacement. I don't want this to situation to escalate.
All I want is for you to make good on what you sold me the same as I
would expect from any reseller. When you advertize something as "New"
it is implied that it is in good working condition. Should that be
true, there must be one of two thing happen, a full refund or a
correction to the problem. Either of these options is fine with me, but
I would prefer a full refund of the original purchase price of $43.00
If you chose to replace the power supply, I would expect an identical
replacement. Nothing has been installed in the case since purchase. As
a matter of fact, the case has only been removed from the box a couple
of times and still has the protective tape on the front of the case.
Just as a matter of information, I have the original posting for the
case, it lists it as "New" and never indicating an "as-is" purchase.
I'll be off campus untill wednesday, but will check e-mail daily
between now and then. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

you're not obligated to do anything. when he walked out with it, he agreed to keep it. that is, unless he requested that he test it out first, which it doesnt appear he did. you are not a retailer, and you have no warranty or guarantee that you gave him

Look up the cheapest 400W supply for like $10 bucks at pricewatch.com and ship it to him. Tell him thats all you can do. I don't know if its 10 bucks, but its a guess considering they sell cheapoo 550w for like $18 last time I checked...

Had he tested it immediately ( or may be a week or so) his request would have been reasonable. Moreover, I do not have any power supplies with me. It is more than a month now that I sold him the case.

Tell him to SUCK IT. Especially since he tried to pull that "I found it cheaper somewhere else" bit.

Give him the contact information for the company you bought the case from and provide him with purchase documentation so he can get it exchanged under warranty. If there's none through the vendor, tell him to contact the manufacturer.

[edit]Send him a link to this thread too.[/edit]

The company won't pay the shipping fee and won't refund the initial shipping fee either. There is a 15% restocking fee too. I bought it 2 months ago and sold it to him 1 month ago. It is cheaper to buy a PS than dealing with the company. :|

Tell him to take it up with the manufacturer. If the power supply was bad on the case and it was still yours, you'd have to pay the restocking fee, etc. Tell him tough luck - when he makes a purchase from an individual, he accepts the lack of protection afforded to him when buying from a retailer.

Maybe that bad power supply is really unstable memory or a bad mobo or an idiot install...

This guy has a website where he says he often visits newegg.com and tigerdirect.com. I just checked their return policies. They want 15% restocking fee + shipping to them + return shipping. Look at his guts. He says the situation is going to escalate.
