Updated Rig Suggestions.. Got a bigger budget

Budget is $1000... Ideally I want to have everything shipped for around $850 or less

Not going to OC. I just want to build a really stable board.

Case- Cooler Master Praetorian Silver (I'm paying for it so it doesn't count as part of the budget) Does anyone have silent fan recommendations to replace the standard ones in the Praetorian? I'll have to hear how loud the standard ones are first.

Power Supply- Antec 430W Power Supply, Model "TRUE430" (Again I'm paying for it so it doesn't count)

Cpu- AMD Athlon 64 3000 or Athlon 64 2800 (both retail)

Mobo- MSI K8N Neo Platinum

RAM- ADATA Vitesta PC4000 1 or 2x512MB ( from a response to the original post)? Going for 1 gig.

What are other value ram recommendations?

Video Card- ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 meg? Recommendations on specifics or any will do?

5in1 or 8in1 internal memory card reader- recommendations?

Other questions
------------------

If I went the OEM on the proc and got a Thermalright SLK948U or Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu would it be quieter than the retail fan? And also whats the best thermal compound to use?

Thanks again for all your suggestions and help.

Thinking of upgrading my bro's computer since its a little long in the tooth. His current rig is an Athlon 1400, 512 ddr 2100 ram, Asus A7M266, Geforce 2. No rush to upgrade the vid card since hes fine with that.

I need suggestions for a mobile Athlon and Athlon 64 rig...

Currently stability is my biggest concern upgradeability least since this rig should last for a couple years.

Budget is around $400-$600

mobile athlon
CPU- mobile athlon 2600 ($100)
Heatsink- ThermalRight SLK-947U ($40)
Mobo-Abit NF7-S v2 ($85)
RAM- I can use the old ram with the Abit mobo?

I know I can go with the Asus A7N8X Deluxe as an alternative but I would need dual channel DDR? Recommendations for that kind of ram?

athlon 64
CPU- athlon 64 3000+
Heatsink- retail included
Mobo-?
RAM-?

I know I could wait for the 939 but those parts would be a premium.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Just a heads up for the XP-M system, if you go that way... The SLK-947U is only $19.99 now @ SVC.

And yes, you can run the PC2100 in the Abit board, but if you want to run high FSB's, you will need to run the memory asynchronus from the FSB which will kill performance...

I just bought the same exact mobile rig you got, mobo cpu and all. I've heard that the SLK-947U doesn't fit on the motherboard correctly and you need the neo backplate, but i've heard it'll work fine from others as well. I'll get back to you in 2 days with the results of my work. I made a huge mistake in the build (First time, bad instructions) so I have to backtrack like all of my work.

MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R K8T800 motherboard
Any decent PC3200 RAM will do, get something cheap from Corsair, OCZ, Mushkin, Kingston

I don't quite see how the GeForce2 is sufficient and the Athlon 1.4GHz is not... the GeForce2 will be a /major/ bottleneck after upgrading.

Athlon XP:
CPU - Athlon XP 2400+ 35W or 2600+ 45W mobile
MB - Abit NF7-S or DFI Infinity
HS - Thermalright SP-97 or SLK947U
RAM - PC3500 of choice for the NF7-S, ADATA Vitesta PC4000 for the Infinity, 2x512MB or 256MB
VGA - Radeon 9800 Pro

Athlon 64:
CPU - Athlon 64 3000+ OR 2700+/2800+ 35W mobile (difference: 512K cache and $30, which is about how much it's worth)
MB - MSI K8N Neo Platinum or Epox 8KDA3+
HS - Thermalright SLK948U or Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu
RAM - ADATA Vitesta PC4000 1 or 2x512MB
VGA - Radeon 9800 Pro or ideally wait for a GeForce 6800 / GT or X800XT PE at an acceptable price

You can use your current memory with either, but it'll degrade performance, how much I don't know. I don't think it'd be that much money to sell it and add a little money to upgrade to something faster.

My bro plays old games like Subspace aka Continnum and D2. Until he finds other games it would be overkill to upgrade the vid card.

ILLISSSIUS: Didn't you read the whole original post by Storm! He only has $400-60 to spend on an upgrade which will be tricky with that budget and what he needs to upgrade.

The A64 rig would run about $1500, definitely not doable. But the XP rig would be more manageable.

Oops, sorry, I just skimmed it actually. Missed that line 🙁. In that case my suggestions for the Athlon XP parts minus the video card should be about right.

For the A64 setup, Anandtech just did a review a little over a week ago comparing socket 754 motherboards. You can choose whats best for you: link
