another vote for Australia or South America.. if you have a choice take Australia first as it only has one entrance whereas South America has two...
defend it and build up your army as the rounds go by...
save your cards for a massive attack... when you cash in your cards for your armies make sure you use your army so that people are caught off guard... (this is only if you cash for like 30+ armies or something)...

The best strategy I have found is to take over every country. I have never lost doing this.

australia and south america are for suckers

i've NEVER seen someone successfully win by starting with one of those two

you're like 'ooh! i got a continent!' but those two extra armies just aren't going to cut it

the key is either north america or europe and those 5 extra armies a pop

north america is first choice, as people tend to ignore you over there

but if initial country selection doesn't favor that, i've also had good luck with europe

The game kind of depends on how you start.

IT also, more than anything else, depends on who your playing with and the way you deal with them. Africa and North America are good choices for places to start. If you happen to get 3 out of 4 territories, or even 2 out of 4 when the other 2 are seperate players, go for those. On the first round don't build up any forces in a place that they will be lost, or place your forces to "compete" with somebody else for a continent the first turn.

Try to get a continent the first turn losing as few armies as possible, sets you up for a big expansion the second round to get a fairly good sized continent. Also, if your trying to get something like north america, don't conquer it fully the first round, it will make it easier to take the 2nd round, and the others won't be nearly as threatened and wanting to attack you.

Also turn order comes to play, if your in the early part of a round, be more defensive, later part more offensive.

Find, amongst the players your playing with, the easiest to sway into your thinking. Alliances are easily broken, and profitable to have, and to break.

MOST OF ALL- DONT LISTEN IF SOMEBODY PROPOSES A DEAL TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!!

I own Risk, Risk 30 year anniversery edition, Risk 2210, Risk: Godstorm, Diplomacy, Stratego, Game of Thrones, and 3 versions of Axis and Allies. (I'm big into strategy)

Never attempt initially to start a two front attack.

Once you control a continent, then expand into the next door country from your continent and build up your armies. (Create a beachhead).

Expand your beachheads slowly, always keeping reserves on your own continent beachheads.

If you can make small sacrifical lightnig thrusts between Asia/Europe and Africa, it can weaken the opponent.

Good points. I usually go for north america, simply because it is worth so much. Australia is best after that because it has only one entrance, but I'll only skip N.A. if some other player is REALLY building up to take it first. Also, Europe is a bad call (too many entrances) unless you have NA and nobody is giving europe a serious try. Also, obviously, Asia should be avoided at all costs until endgame.Worth noting is that Africa + South america = N.A. in both number of entrances and bonus soldiers, so that's a viable alternative route. Still, the realy key is to be aggressive but flexible. I have lost games because I missed key opportunities that seemed very insignificant at the time, and I ignored because they were outside my main strategy.

I find the best way to win is to mess with the other players heads. Talk them into doing something stupid, or attacking someone else. They will weaken themselves...and when they turn on you, because they will...use it! When one army starts to advance, convince the others that whoever attacked you is weakened now, and they should take him over...then when they attack him, attack them. God I have too much fun!

Here's the best way to win.

1. Go to the place you're playing with a 6 pack of beer (cheap beer)
2. Throw the cans at everyone playing
3. Tell them the following statement. "I win because I just knocked all of you out. Now I'm going to go have some FUN!"
4. Go out drinking and talking to women/men who aren't playing risk
5. You win.

This is the best strategy.

1) You are on a board full of nerds.
2) There are other things out there besides pussy.

The problem with trying to initially control Africa or Europe is that there are to many borders to safeguard with the amount of forces tht will be initially available to you.

The initial object should be to control the most amount of contigious territory with the minimal amount of exterior borders.

With N America having only three borders to control (Alaska/Greenland/Central America) it can provide the biggest bang for the buck. However, trying to take over the interior can be expensive.

When trying for a major expansion, try to not tip your hand as much as possible, preventing the opponents from re-enforcing their territories.

south america to start, bleed into africa. from there you can push into europe or n. america which are both very good to hold. If someone else starts with s. america, try for africa. If you have lots of people playing, concentrate in n. america and with a full boat of players, try to start with europe. WHY? because with more players, that means more competition for territory and amassing large armies should be considerably harder, so if you can make a quick snatch for n america, odds are greatly in your favor of holding. if there's only like 4 people total, you want s. america since it gives up ok resources and you have 2 attractive options for expansion.

australia sucks because you have nowhere to go after you hold australia for a while. It's HIGHLY unlikely your opponents will let you take asia and the fact that you hold a continent makes you an early target. Leave it alone and let your opponents try to take it and exhaust themselves while you rancor on the other hemisphere.

If you are manually choosing where you start off, choose North America. You get lots of reinforcements for the continent and you only have to defend 3 spots.

Howaboutthis? play chess?

or...
Manually choosing places makes it hard to get south america or australia, because if someone obviously wants them then the other players will reinforce there to create a stalemate. I like faking for either of them, then trying for N. America or Africa. I like africa because it has fewer countries to take over, but only one more border than n america.

This thread makes me want to play risk again. :| Damn you people. Anyways, whichever continent you go for, find choke points and hold them, even after you spread. Being defensive won't win the game for you, but holding onto your continental bonuses will. I usually try and take the territory outside my continent, so that I can also deny a bonus to anyone else, rather than having a defensive force on my land.

Everytime I've played, the first to get Australia has won (Unless there is really, really bad luck with dice rolls). You'll get 2 extra armies for maybe 10 turns before anyone else has a chance to get even close to having another continent. Place one of those on the entrance to Australia and the other one (plus your normal units each turn) goes to stopping whomever else is closest to gaining another continent. You can pretty much sit back and watch everyone else fighting and then place a bunch of armies into whatever continent is closest to being obtained by an opponent.

I then branch out to South America or Africa (Africa is nice to have with Australia as it is a double entrance to Asia, making Asia an easier final target).

The biggest hint of all of course is to be the last person to turn in your cards for extra armies. Doing this means that every 3 turns when everyone turns in their cards you'll get the most extra armies.
[*]For example on 4 person play, after ~ 4 turns your opponents will get 4, 6, and 8 armies for turning in. You wait until the fifth turn and get 10.
[*]Then on ~ the 7th turn your opponents get 10, 12, and 15, while you get 20.
[*]Then on ~ the 10th turn your opponents get 20, 25, 30, while you get 35.
[*]The pattern continues, every 3 turns you get a lot more than your opponents.

don't look too strong too early. Then people will attack you and you'll fall back to the crowd.

North America is a better strategy. It's 3 borders compared to 2 for South America, but it generates 5 extra armies per turn instead os SA's 2. The issue with the South America strategy is that in a game with good players somebody will try Australia and somebody will try North America. The Australia player is left alone and the NA/SA players will be forced to duke it out in Central America. The NA player should eventually win on reinforcements.

Drink lots of beer and be very loud. You can win any game with this strategy. You must drink the most, and be the loudest one there.

Go for either S.America or Australia, but remember to always attack an army per turn to get your card. Dont go for Europe ever.
