Bay City--Twenty-year-old Jason Betzold is in an Ann Arbor hospital after he was attacked by a man with a three foot sword early Wednesday morning.
The attack occurred around 2:30 a.m. at the corner of Jackson and McKinley in Bay City. When police arrived they found Betzold lying in a pool of blood and both of his hands were almost completely cut off.
He was air lifted to the University of Michigan Medical Center where surgeons have reportedly been able to save one of his hands and were working on the other.
Witnesses say Betzold was trying to break up a fight when a 43-year-old Bay City man pulled out the sword and attacked him. By mid-morning police located the suspect. He is being held in the Bay County jail until he can be arraigned.
The name of the suspect has not been released

Jason Betzold?s family and friends watched nervously as the man accused of attacking him with a three foot sword was arraigned in aBay City court Thursday.
The accused attacker, 43-year-old Dion Samuel Goodell of Bay City , is no stranger to the criminal justice system. In 1997 he was found guilty on possession of child pornography charges, a misdemeanor at the time. He has also spent time in prison for felony firearm charges and is currently on probation for additional weapons charges.
Following the attack that almost severed Betzold?s hands, Goodell was charged with assault with intent to commit murder, mayhem and carrying a weapon with unlawful intent.
Jerry Gubala helped raise Betzold since he was a baby. She says that he has diminished mental capacity and had recently started living on his own. Wednesday she stayed by his bedside at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor after surgeons worked to attempt to save his hands.
Goodell is being held in the Bay County jail on one million dollars bond.
