Dish Network has reasonable tivo deals, with no lawsuits attached - I have been looking into this as an alternative to cable. For anyone else in the same situation.

Dish Network does NOT have Tivo. They have a competetor device called a PVR (personal video recorder). Basiccally it is a dumb tapeless VCR. You tell it what channel you want to record and what time to record and it does. That's it. If your show is a repeat for 10 weeks in a row. It will record that show over and over again. If your show is cancelled and never ever comes on again. It will still record on the channel and time that you told it to.

As for Tivo.... well tivo finds programs for you. It will record things it "thinks" that you will like. It can find and record programs based on keywords, show titles, genres or actors names. It knows when to record re-runs and when not to. It knows when a show has been moved from 8:00 to 9:00. It knows if a show runs over by 15 minutes and makes the necessary changes. The Dish Network PVR does none of the above.

To my knowledge, which is not as infinite as I would like it to be... ;), the new dish 921 (which is not out yet) will still not have Tivo like features. It will still be a big dumb tapeless VCR with the exception that it can receive and record HDTV feeds. DirecTV has a HD DirecTivo that is supposed to be out sometime early next year to compete with it.

i just realized my deal isn't foolproof

check this out:

Tivo + 4 Recievers + Single LNB Dish

4 room + tivo and single LNB dish for 49.99. can i call them and upgrade for $20 to the triple LNB dish + 49.99 for a 5x8 switch?

also, wouldn't a 5x8 switch be included in this deal anyways?

C'mon, have you never taken a break or two from the forums? While I don't totally agree with all he/she has posted on this (I think there are better deals out there from time to time) and I do see some "inside reasoning" to their steadfast defense of Direct TV, I believe they have all the rights accorded to all of us to post this. If you don't like the deal, pass it up. That's pretty simple and keeps within the rules of AT; in particular about crapping on a thread. My opinion. Like it or leave it, that's all it is.

Google "directv lawsuit" :( I am working on an iso 7816 system for VPN access. I have purchased cards, readers, and writers. Therefore, if I had Directv, I would be the target of a lawsuit. NOT HOT. If you have a card loader at all that was purchased from a raided shop the fact that you don't have direct TV means nothing. At first people thought the only ones who were getting the letters were people with direct TV subscriptions but turns out that people who never had direct TV were getting sued also. Your guilty untill you prove yourself innocent.

DirecTV Defense

Check this out, it explains the lawsuit in detail from the viewpoint of the defendants.

I just read one of their cease and desist letters, that's pretty crazy the way they are going about this. I guess i haven't paid enough attention to smartcards, i don't know how they are used except for security purposes, and only vaguely understand how they can be used to steal satellite.

I guess if you program them you can steal satellite, but just the fact that you have smartcard technology doesn't automatically incriminate you! i dont have enough time to read this now, but will when i get a chance (whenever that is)

You don't have to be a subscriber to get caught in the DirecTV dragnet. It depends where you purchased the device. The cheapest place to get an ISO 7816 device is from a DSS site. A programer itself does not get decrypt satellite signals like a cablebox does for cable. DirecTV is loosing cases and defendants are getting Summary Judgements. DirecTV has lost me as a customer when my GD contract is up.

The Dish Network PVRs are not Tivo's, but they are far from dumb. I have had them all, UltimateTV, DirecTivo, and DishPlayer. I personally put the Ultimate at the top and the Tivo at the bottom.

Ok, i placed my order this weekend and it came out to be 198.66 Shipped

Products
------------------------------------------------------
1 x 4-Room Special with Triple LNB Dish (2681) = $19.99
1 x DIRECTV® DVR with TiVo® - Receiver Only (2510) = $99.99
1 x 5-in-8-out MULTISWITCH for Multi-Satellite Dish (2573) = $49.99
------------------------------------------------------
Sub-Total: $169.97
Tax: $0.00
Table Rate (Best Way): $28.99
Total: $198.96

After i get my shipping Rebate, it will be 169.97, but i think it was due to a glitch in their system.

They charged my card $259.98, but i spoke with their sales rep. He tried to explain to me why it was 259.98, but after he logged on and added the equipment like me, he apologized and said that his supervisor will credit me the money. In the morning she will go to the operations department, and sort out their problem, so you better get in on it quick if you want it!

btw, you NEED the referral ID to get this deal!

I'd rather jam a pencil in my ear than give these scum a single dollar.

By the way, a quick warning just so my post isn't an entirely opinionated bash: The original poster was right. They're selling you the equipment but if you have a problem with it you're sol. I switched from dish to directv (I couldn't even tell you why) a few years back. I set the system up myself since I didn't want to wait for the installation guy. I had issues setting it up even though I've set up two dish systems with zero problems. After hours on the phone with Directv I got zero help. They basically told me to call anyone but them. I ended up taking that system back and going with Dish who has always been very helpful in the event of any problems. Just something to think about...

Well, I ordered from ExpertSatellite... so far their install guy didn't even show up or answer his voicemail from the install company. Wonderful... at least my install date is before Thanksgiving. I hope they live up to their promise of refunding my shipping cost.

Is this deal only good with the referral ID? If true, can someone PM the referral ID? Thanks!

I ordered from expert satellite, and their contract installer company is "installs inc." based out of buffalo, NY.

the installer they sent out was not only really cool but the 2nd day there was some problem with the reception i called the personal cell he gave me and he arrived that evening, had a beer with me, and climbed on the roof when it was raining outside just because i told him i wanted to catch a basketball game at 7pm, and fixed it right there and then.

he was beyond cool. i live in Northern NJ. i recommended expert satellite for contracting a company with really cool employees

Quick question. If I get a multi-room setup, can I cancel the $5 a month charge per receiver if I'm not using them? I'm asking because I'm not sure if I'll need extra receivers in the future.

Btw, code [PM me for code] also works.

And I get a "referral" if you use that code.

The original poster is misleading you guys by not posting this.

Right now you can get up to $80 cash per referral!

You can also join the referral club yourself. Not sure if you can refer yourself, but I dont see why not.

Btw, Expert Satellite is the best place to get Directv (even without the referral program).

Sorry bout the misleading, i'll adjust the message so it's incorporated, but please remove your referral code. I don't want to have this thread locked too!

I just had my system installed today, and i must say the installers were VERY friendly. I was 95% happy with their installation, the 5 % being that they wanted to charge me $75 to fish a new cable to my family room for my tivo. I said i'll just fish it myself, AND THEY GAVE ME AN EXTRA 100ft of cable so i could fish the cable myself.

By the terms of the installation, 100ft is the maximum that they are supposed to use for the entire installation without charging extra. In addition, they drew 4 cables of the same length to the satellite in my back yard.

Be forewarned though, if oyu get the TRIPLE satellite, you can't use diplexers. I was unaware of this, and must now contact Amex to have them accept my return. I tipped the guys $15 for the installation they did. Satellite is HOT! the only downside for me is that i don't get the local DC stations like i did with comcast (i got both Baltimore and DC), just the local Baltimore.

btw, he was willing to lift up the carpet and drill through my floor to get the cable there, but i didn't think that would be too prudent.
