it really depends on your RX the thicker the lens the harder it is to warp around like the original lens do

This. Due to my prescription, certain sporty sunglasses will not work because the curvature of the lens makes it so that the lens would have to be incredibly thick.

Exactly.

I've had cool looking curved Oakleys not eligible for RX b/c my RX is too extreme (past -2.75). If you have a very weak RX, then it can be doable.

If any frame you choose isn't too curved, then you should be OK.

Also know, that you can't skate away without paying over $300+ for a good pair of RX.

I had some custom lenses cut for oakley minute 2.0's which are about as curved as oakley gets. My RX is -5.75 and -6 which is way beyond the limit for OEM oakley lenses in that model. It did take them 2 tries to get the lenses correct but it was worth it.

I went to an optometrist that is also an oakley dealer. Cost me about $350 even after my vision insurance.

I looked on their website, but it is super slow and not loading for me for some reason. Do they have listings of their dealers on their website?

How much should an examination cost. About 2 years ago Lenscrafters hit me with $250 for an examination + wanted $600 for contact lens exam.

I have insurance, but I don't think glasses are covered.

I think you may have your facts wrong...chances are this is what your parent(s) said it cost.

If you are right, you got ass raped and probably have a lawsuit.

Get your eye exam. The prescription is good for 2 years. Go online to www.zennioptical.com & order a pair of glasses. You can get a complete set of glasses with titanium frames that can be bent into a knot & return to their original shape, lenses with tint, anti-glare, and scratch resistant coating - the whole works for under $50. I highly suspect that a lot of optometrists are just stocking the same types of frames, ordering from zennioptical themselves, and marking the price up a few hundred dollars. I know I would, since they're the exact same frames and lenses. All that the optometrists do is cut the blank lenses to fit into the frame. They don't make the prescription lenses themselves.

What's the difference between "fitting" and "exam?" The guy told me it required a whole new exam?

I guess they were robbing me. I hate these stores run by ghetto ass people. :\

An exam gets you your prescription, the fitting is just the assessment of the shape of your eyes and prescription and to make sure you get the best fit of lens (which includes rigidity, base curve, and astigmatism correction etc).

Anyone who needs custom eyeglass lenses, PM me. I'll beat any deal except for those cheap $20 specials...

My vision is pretty bad (like 6.5/7.5) and that was waaaay too thick to have just about any sunglasses made that were even slightly wrapped around.

that's pretty outrageous?

I think it was 75 for the exam for me - and my vision coverage paid 100%.

They offered the dilation + eye picture for 25, but I had taken it the previous year so I declined.

costco optical (at least the one near me since I think each is independent) charges 100 for a contact lens exam for your first time fitting/etc, and I think they charge 75 normally

The Costco here (remember, the opticians are all independent) charges $45 for an eye exam for glasses. Not sure about the price for contacts.

OP, if your glasses are so thick they resemble the bottoms of coke bottles...then most likely, prescription Oakleys aren't for you. Too much distortion in the bends.

MOST major sunglass manufacturers offer prescription lenses...with some restrictions on what they can/will do.

I wear bifocals and MOST of the sunglass manufacturers won't do their lenses in bifocal lenses. IIRC, Maui Jim started offering bifocals last year IIRC, but again, there are some restrictions on the lens strength and only in a few frames.

I like Zenni Optical, but I'm not too crazy about their flexible titanium frames - the pair I bought snapped into two pieces under light stress. No more of those for me. Also, the black paint peeled off of the last pair of regular frames I got from them. I hope that was just a fluke...

Weren't you talking about buying a motorcycle? If you're planning on using them for that you may want to look into some made specifically for sports. Right now I'm considering getting a pair of prescription Transitions in WileyX frames so I can use the same glasses during the day and at night on the bike.

I have a friend who has a pair that turns into sunglasses in the light and changes to regular glasses in the dark.

No, I would be scared to death to go on a motorcycle. I was just amazed how little they cost. :)

Costco is the best spot for prescription glasses/sunglasses. Selection is not the best but at least they don't rape you.

Their eyeglass/contact lens exams are generally $89 too.

Contacts suck. Glasses just suck wayyyy more. :p

I haven't worn glasses in...probably two years now? No, more than that. I'm hoping to get Lasik this summer...which means I need to buy glasses in order to get the evaluation..oh well.
