Maybe your wish has been granted -- looks like someone just bumped the price by $100. Now $1,699 delivered.

This has been my justification for the last year or so and I've been seriously looking at EDTV panels. However, not until I was really ready to buy and give them a critical eye side by side did I decide it would be the wrong choice. I definitely understand your logic - but would make sure you take a close look at it. I even went down the "well eventually I'll put this into my bedroom" route - but even for that, this panel doesn't have speakers etc which I would want later on if I moved it to "secondary TV" duty.

At $1599 plus free shipping it was a good deal - now it's $100 more - but I'm just not confident it'd be the right thing to do... I was viewing from 5-8 feet away and there was still a notable difference between the ED and HD panels. It wasn't so much sheer pixel count - it was more the screen door effect that finally convinced me to stick with HD. There's no evidence that you WON'T be able to get an HD set for $2000 by year end, so...

Wow , even at $1699, the deal is pretty hot.

I got one two years ago (the 5UY) for double that. Its is a great plasma though. I haven't seen another that has a better picture.

The ED vs. HD debate is a difficult one.

I went into Bestbuy fully prepared to buy an HD plasma display, but then I looked at the ED panels sitting next to the HDs. The Panasonic ED 42" display looked real good to me at my viewing distance of 10 feet, where I would be sitting on my couch, not standing 3 or 4 feet away like we do at the store. Cnet.com lists a Pana 42" ED as excellent, better than other pricier HD displays. Now I know why.

The ED had a clearer look, less washed out, more realistic and with greater contrast. The picture had more of a 3 dimensional look compared to the other EDs and several HD displays. Now, there was no Pioneer or Panasonic HD next to the ED to compare it to, but it looked better to me than the LG and Samsung HD pics sitting next to the Panasonic. But then again my eyes aren't what they used to be! YMMV.

I'm a few clicks away from buying this, the price just dropeed $20 to a $1,679.00, I don't know much about televisions and the reviews i've read seem good. Anyone have any reason why I shouldn't purchase this item?

How is the reseller rating for these guys?

Thanks,
