Seems the race was a bit controversial as far as those who like the action and those who thought it was boring.

I thought it was pretty good.

I enjoyed it. Wasn't much happening up front and the drivers set expectations low before the race with comments about the track surface, might be why some thought it was boring.

Plenty going on midfield. Lots of screwups and changes happening through and coming out of turn 8 at the fake marina. Good climbs from Russell, Albon, and especially Ocon.

Overall not bad for a first run. Curious what might change for next year.

I thought it was a good track and a good race. I went in expecting not to like it because I don't really like those narrow street circuits, but this was much better than Monaco or Jedda. A lot of action and opportunities for most of the field.

Kind of surprised Mercedes finished the way they did, because they were looking good for the weekend and whether or not their fixes did anything for their performance, it looked like the track, at least, helped to handicap them to make them more competitive at the top, at least for this weekend.

Sainz was great defending from Checo with the fresh tires at the restart. Glad he finally finished a race too, heh.

Yeah, Carlos drove his butt off under heavy pressure. All Perez had to do was wait for a mistake, but, he was the one to make a mistake. Max and Sainz looked like they had been through the ringer after that race, Leclerc looked much fresher.

Absolutely terrible results for Ferrari with double DNF due to engine (Leclerc) and hydraulic (Sainz) failure. This and their mistake at Monaco must be demoralizing for the team and drivers. Red Bull is now 1 & 2nd on the driver standings. Mercedes can't seem to fix their porpoising issue.

I wonder if old man Lewis will be able to drive next week. His back looked shot. I'm surprised the teams have pretty much decided to accept the bouncing this far into the season, as long as the performance is still there. This situation is wrecking the drivers.

Those nice Ferrari power units seem to be...unreliable across the field. Not good for those teams.

Well, between his physio and two trigger point injections of a corticosteroid and he'll be good to go. As someone with recurring back problems, I do feel for him right now.

Yeah, RB started out with poor reliability, but Ferrari is tanking pretty badly right now. Kind of sucks as a racing fan, the drama of the race falls off quite a bit when this happens.

Overall, a good race. I like the Circuit, but too many DRS trains. Great race between Verstappen and Sainz in the final laps. As an RB fan, bummed that Perez's engine augured in. As an F1 fan, nice to see Mercedes being competitive!

I swear F1 should take a lesson from Indycar and switch to a push-to-pass system. Probably be way less complex and more entertaining.

Ive thought about that too, but I don’t think it would work with F1s strict fuel limit. I just don’t know what F1 can do without wrecking other fun aspects of the whole system. Putting an even tighter cost cap in place would even things out, but then much of the cutting edge engineering would go out the window, and so forth.

And, I think Indy cars use way too much fuel, but there is no way around it on many US circuits. Fun to watch though, well, ovals no so much for me at least - that’s why I could never get into NASCAR.

1st win for Sainz but the decision to not pit Leclerc is questionable at best. Leclerc and Max both sustained damages to their car during race. Great battle between the top 4. There are a few controversial moves by some drivers that were left unpunished. Horrifying crash for Zhou luckily he seems ok. Double points for Haas. Ricciardo back to no mans land. FIA issuing an update to the technical directive sparked some talks regarding some teams finding a grey area in the rules regarding elements on the floor flexing more than intended.

Thanks Zebrax2! I really enjoyed this race. Ferrari did blow it wrt the driver championship by not pitting Charles, at least Sainz got a well deserved win. Verstappen was very racy till his floor was scragged by debris. I am hoping Merc can keep edging forward. Ricciardo just hasn’t been able to get it together post Redbull - just horrible.

A Sprint in Austria is going to be interesting, with overtaking being very possible around there, but the potential to get it wrong just as bad.
I'm excited already!

Well, the Sprint was fun. Not so much out front, but plenty of little drama, and a Checo managed to redeem himself somewhat after that post-fact Q3 exclusion.
Now let's do it one more time with strategy. The top 5 looked pretty evenly matched so far.

A win for Leclerc. Ferrari seems to have superior pace to Red Bull during the race unfortunately Sainzs' engine decided to blow itself up. The ending is also a nail biter as Leclerc started having throttle issue. Perez got hit by Russel at the start then Red Bull decided to retire him 1/3 into the race. Double points for Haas again with Mick getting the DOTD. Track limit violation warnings was raining throughout the race. Zhou was given a 5 sec penalty for exceeding track limits which was later clarified as a mistake.

It was a good race. Wish Sainz and Perez didn’t get knocked out so we would have seen some more interesting strategy plays. Apparently tire deg on the RBs was worse than the Ferraris, a switch from earlier in the year. Could have been a poor setup on RB, or just Ferrari having a better car for the circuit this year. The DRS trains continue to annoy me - F1 needs a solution to this, IMHO. Nice result for Hamilton, Ocon and Shumacher.

Can someone explain to me wtf Ferrari were thinking today? I mean...Sainz was pretty much going to get a podium, maybe 2nd even, with the potential of blowing out and getting nothing, of course...but they opted to play it safe and get a possible maximum of like, 3 points from him today?

The fuck is wrong with their brains? And bothering him while he was passing Perez? lolwtf is going on with that team. Part of me understands that they would have risked more if LeClerk were still in the race at that point, but seriously: the fuck is the difference from getting no more than 3 points or zero points if they actually had some balls and let him stay in and finish on those old tires?

Dude was smoking the field. The new power unit was goddamn impressive yesterday in qualifying and in race...I guess they don't trust themselves because of all the failures they have had this year....but what a bunch of dumbfuckery. Austria was a great weekend, this one was obnoxious, lol.

I guess Merc should be happy, but still, they really only beat Perez today. They needed LeClerk to drive into a wall and Ferrari generally decide not to win for some reason, to get the result that they did.

Huge blunder by Leclerc with Max pretty much running away with the championship now. Good drive by Sainz. A bad drive by Perez not getting past Lewis at the start of the race (barely even tried) and getting caught asleep after the VSC. Mercs getting closer to the top teams it looks like in terms of race pace but still has issues getting their tires to proper temperature quickly which greatly affect their qualifying.

@zinfamous
I think Sainz got a 5 sec penalty due to unsafe release and Ferrari probably thought Sainz wouldn't be able to create enough of a gap to clear Perez and Russell anyway so why risk it especially since Sainz has reportedly have a blister on the front-right tire. A tire failure could also result to a crash and that would not only eat into their budget (budget cap) but potentially damage Sainz new PU as well. On the other hand the unsafe release shouldn't have happened in the first place anyway.

That was a LONG way to go on medium tires. Too far. I think they should have brought him sooner, with 15 laps to go, and put soft tires on. The told him to go as fast as he fucking can.
Trying to talk to a driver while he is passing was incredible, we’re they not watching the race? Well of course they were not judging by the calls they made.

That was rough to watch and hear. From Sainz's messages he seems very aware of the overall race situation, and then the race engineers hit him up at all the wrong times for seemingly nonsensical messages or strategies.

Yeah at that point the 5 second penalty didn't really matter if he was able to continue--he still would have cleared 2nd place. Pit stop with his penalty was what, ~32 seconds? He finished 28s off, and had to clear traffic when they released him and gained 4? more places.

Yes, I understand the risk of leaving him on those old tires and they certainly should have brought him in earlier, but my argument is about not taking risk. Ferrari seems to have no balls. If his tires were fading that bad, then his grip wasn't showing it. Is it that they were only worried about a blowout and possibly damaging the shiny new bits they bolted on that weekend? ...they're Ferrari. They have money! If he has to start at the back of the field again next week, so what? He clearly has the pace.

Sainz drives a lot like Alonso in terms of being able to understand and control the situation from the cockpit. I think they should just let him drive. :D
