Oh bummer. I thought cameras were going to be filming the three days of pre-season testing. :(

1. Massi is out to be replaced by 2 persons (1 from WEC and another from DTM)
2. Virtual Control Rooms
3. Unlapping procedures being reviewed
4. No more direct communication with the race directors

Well, first race coming up, looks like everyone is talking up Ferrari and Haas, while talking Mercedes down - but we've been there before.
Looking forward to quali, when finally the bullshit stops :)

Can't say I'm too pleased to see Magnussen back in the field. He never left me with anything but negative emotions, during his tenure...

Well, after 1st & 2nd practice, it sure does look like Mercedes is down. They still do not have control over the porpoising of their cars that occurs when the vehicle is disturbed by a bump or a dip. If they are sandbagging, and actually have a fix, this will be the greatest bait and switch ever - but I doubt that very much. Ferrari and Red Bull look pretty well dialed in already. Ricciardo had a terrible day in his Mclaren, finally retiring with an engine coolant leak (Merc engine). Missed seeing Seb out there, has Covid. Seemed like a number of drivers/cars having balance issues with the front or back: locking up the fronts or losing the rear under acceleration. These new cars seem to be causing significant teething issues. I hope things are better come race time, otherwise there could be allot of crashes.

Anyway, Saturday qualifying is the first real world test. See y’alls posts this weekend!

Ferrari tosses down the gauntlet. I was a bit pissed that my Q3 feed cut from the first 30 or so seconds to the final results, and then wouldn't let me rewind. ...Hulu issues. I paused it and skipped the one ad break, watched Q1-2 with no problems, but my stream decided to screw me in the deciding round.

Again. This is the last year, Hulu!

Anyway, I like to see Perez reminding people that he isn't just a teammate in a world champion's car.

Bottas. ....hahaha. You know he's happy to finish ahead of Russell.

Magnussen and Schumacher...uh and Hass, what? I guess the hype might be real?

We shall see. (may be it's the ejection of an oligarch owner and then you realize where all their resources went the last year when you may have an F1 team that is just there for you to steal from vs a uh...national army that is also OK to steal from, based on evidence, so...man. maybe we are seeing this effect in all facets of these guys social/business/leadership philosophy? lol, I dunno. I will keep that stuff out of this thread, but that's truly a bizarre and instant turnaround for this team, in so shockingly short of a time, is it not?)

Nice start to the season. Let's go!

Added to show lap times. It's just not going to be Mercedes day today, they have still a lot of work to do. Russell is well back in 9th, but that's because he overcooked the first turn on his flying lap. Nice to see Ferrari back!

1 Charles LECLERC Ferrari. 1:30.5582
2 Max VERSTAPPEN Red Bull Racing. 1:30.6813
3 Carlos SAINZ Ferrari. 1:30.6874
4 Sergio PEREZ Red Bull Racing. 1:30.9215

2022 Bahrain Race Results:

P1. Leclerc
P2. Sainz
P3. Hamilton :beercheers:
P4. Russell
P5. Magnussen :astonished:

Gasly's retirement sure shook up things quite a bit I must say. A double DNF for Red Bull w/ in 2-3 laps of each other, not a good start to the new era of aero cars.

^ F1TV FTW! They've done a really good job since I got the app for Apple TV.

The problem I had was pausing and rewinding for a while, to pick something I missed, and skipped ahead a bit. So, eventually, my stream was delayed by about the entire Q3 time. This is supposed to work with Hulu--you can sometimes start late and rewind to the beginning of the live stream...but it's inconsistent from stream to stream and I don't know why. Anyway, at start of Q3, it just locked up for a minute, then skipped to the last 2 seconds of Q3. Wouldn't let me rewind at all. Annoying.

I'll heck that out. I got a new HULU live + Disney package, which I'm sharing with a friend, but it's stupid expensive for all of that ($75, without ads). Removing the live bit brings it down to $13, lol. I need to see if ESPN+ (part of the package) gives me all I need for F1.

I'm only interested in the Live Hulu stuff for college sports, really, same with my friend. after NCAA tournament is over, neither of us really care about the summer, and I only care about F1. So, I'm going to look into what ESPN+ offers for F1, since is is already part of the package, and if not, maybe F1TV? assuming I can get that outside of Apple+. I don't want another streaming package.

...anyhoo. Really good look from Ferrari. Seems like the first all-out win for them in some years? As I recall, their only podiums last year were taking advantage of pretty much everyone in front of them crashing out of the race at the time. But Redbull and certainly Mercedes didn't have the pace to catch them today. Really impressive. Mercedes is in real trouble right now. I'm not sure if it's just the porpoising, which is a big deal but a lot of teams are dealing with it, or they are really down on power. Redbull flaming out at the end looks bad, but I have to assume it's an issue they can fix with their batteries? I don't know enough about it but I'm inclined to think that Mercedes has many more issues to deal with than Redbull right now.

Damn Haas is legit, lol. What the hell happened to McClaren? Alfa looks great, too. Alpine disappointing, imo. Williams livery looks great! That's about all we can say for them, though....pfft.

3 cars down out of the Red Bull stable in their first race!! Very bad news. Too bad, the chassis looks very solid. Ferrari looked so so good, although Sainz was having a little bit of trouble. Great talent finally matched with what looks like a great car. Podium spot for Lewis, didn’t see that coming!

The ability to follow with with these new cars is better than I expected.

Mick's crash was a shocker - probably of the same magnitude G-wise as Grosjean's 2020 Bahrain crash, and much harder than even Verstappens Silverstone incident.
I do expect Pietro to race tomorrow, if Haas manage to present a raceable car at all...

Although I do enjoy the "all-or nothing" nature of street circuits, I feel that safety should be reviewed and improved. Particularly T11, where Mick crashed, should have a safer barrier. He wasn't the only one on the verge of crashing there, and it's always going to be a 160mph into concrete at a 45° angle.

Also, congrats to Checo for his first pole! Great showing!

Checo! awesome

Red Bull-Ferrari sandwich tomorrow.

That turn though. This track is just ridiculous and yeah, The Saudis own too much of F1 so it's impossible...but I can't understand why they keep racing here, anyway: In the final seconds of Q3, I think it was Ocon? that choked up on that same turn where Schumaker crashed.

All Mercedes power units in the field are pretty much shit right now--is it something with the engine bouncing around that keeps their cars porpoising? I have no idea, but Russell seems OK...did Merc mistakenly give Lewis's "special car" to Russell this year, and they are just pretending that it didn't happen? Or does this year's car just really prefer Russell's style above all others? Or maybe just this group of circuits?

I dunno, either something is up with Hamilton, but also all the Merc-powered cars have suddenly dropped off form last season. Except for George. Very strange

The porpoising is all due to aerodynamics, not the engine. Unfortunately, this particular problem can’t be solved with wind tunnel work. CFD simulations of on track performance must be done and it’s very time consuming - and they have limited hours of CFD time, IIRC.

Merc had to adjust to the new fuel changes like everyone else, and the made substantial changes to the engine, including a narrowing of the whole package to get that 'coke bottle' shape a the back of the chassis. Obviously, they didn’t manage to up the performance enough to handle the heavier chassis this year.

Two rare stumbles for Mercedes in the turbo hybrid era. F1 is an harsh mistress.

Leclerc dominated the race while Sainz literally binned it. Red bull on the other hand was hit with another reliability issue. Mercedes remains 3rd fastest behind Ferrari and Red Bull with upgrades rumored for Imola. McLaren looked good this race but it remains to be seen if this is more of the track being suited to their car or if they fixed their issues.

Geez, another DNF for Max 😕. Ferrari were just has so much pace, it’s almost shocking! Merc looking better today - still a chance for a three way battle up front as the season progresses at least race to race.

yeah kinda the reverse for Haas, because they suddenly looked way off for this track.

and what the hell with Albon staying way up in the points in a Williams, until the final lap?

LeClerc's car also looked way bouncier than either of the Mercedes today, but Ferrari just didn't care. I'm glad Perez was able to finish. As soon as Max's car decided to immolate itself, I was worried that Perez would be one lap away from that as well. (yes, I know it only started the fire when stopped, because it couldn't cool itself...let me have this!)

Max it too cool for school 😀.

Glad, as well, that Perez' car didn’t go poof as well. I thought both Merc and Ferrari we too bouncy to do that well - wrong. Still, it must be pretty aggravating to drive under those conditions. Those time gaps on the final placing s though - murderous! Sainz sure had a bad day, hope it doesn’t mess with his head.

yeah I really feel bad for Sainz. I like that guy. But hey--as far as his head goes, he's probably better off not being in that race, looking at what the Ferrari was doing to Leclerc's head. That bouncing has got to be unreal for those drivers. I wonder if it's going to have a real effect on them if this keeps up for several more races without a fix

Bad day for Ferrari. They had very good pace, but Sainz was knocked off track and Leclerc had a late spin that led to him finishing in 6th from a almost guaranteed 3rd place finish. Too bad for the Italian Tifosi, who looked to have at least a podium finish at their home race. Great day for RB. Russell did well, Hamilton was stuck in the weeds all race .

Anyway, excellent race!! Last laps after the safety car were nail biting between the top contenders. I like this Miami circuit. Also, something like 240K fans in attendance :D

Edit: Trying something new - grid is too big.
