i've bruised and cracked ribs before and this feels alot like that but the pain is just a hair under the bottom of the sturnum. and i haven't done anything recently even remotely physical that could have caused this. read somewhere about the cartalige getting inflamed and it feeling like this. this hurts like a bitch. i can't freakin sleep.

-update-
i missed one day of work over this because due to my asthma i was haveing trouble breathing an couldn't breath deep enough to use my inhaler. now my work won't let me go back to work without a Dr's note because i was out due to "chest-pains" i don't have insurance so the ER is out, so i have to wait until my Dr can see me at 2pm monday, thats 4 extra days of missed work because my work is a bunch of idiots. i'm 24 and i work at a retail store why do i need a doctors note for this crap.

I think I had something like that. It hurt to breath and my whole chest kept tightening up. I think it was a back spasm or something. I could barely lie down or move. It was really bad for 1 day, then a little better the next and by the 3rd day gone...

Take some tylenol and ice it. Thats all you can really do unless the pain persist a few days then goto the doctor.

i'm hopeing it'll go away on it's own since my insurance won't kick in for another month. it started mid day yesterday and it's gotten gradualy worse. advil and tylenol don't do jack.

you may have Pleurisy.

Pleurisy (PLOOR-iss-ee) is caused by swelling and irritation of the membrane that surrounds the lungs. It is usually a symptom of another illness. It is also called Pleuritic Chest Pain.

Its common, and can be quite painful. last time i had it it would hurt just to laugh or cough.

go see a doctor

the inflammation of the rib cartilage is costochondritis. not sure if you have that though. depending on how old you are you could have a number of different things. doctor time.
