So I have now narrowed it to these two.

The Sony is on sale at Best Buy (where i have to buy the product thanks to a plethora of gift cards) for $399.00 this week.

The Canon is $450.00 ish.

Sony = 5mp
Canon = 4mp

Whats your take?

I have a canon elph and I love this camera. Plus the fact that it's so small makes it even nicer. I've had mine for over 3 years now and it still works great.

Both are great cameras, it's really a personal call. I prefer the canon interface and construction materials on the s400.

Should you go with Canon and its SD or Compactflash (widely-accepted standards), or should you go with Sony's proprietary MemoryStick that only works with Sony products and costs 2-3x as much?

I have a Canon S110. It is an amazing little camera.

I helped my mother buy an Canon Ixus V2 (or in america an elph something-or-other) and I've played with it a lot - I'd recommend them any day. Great cameras.
Only niggles with it are the slight delay between taking photos (although all digital cameras seem to be the same on this) and the fact that it takes movies with sound, but you can't play the sound back on the camera, although with the s400 I believe you can!

Oh yeah, and the fact that I got used to automatic image orientation (while taking photos with the camera on its side, when you view them it automatically shows them right way up) and took a movie that way... So I have to turn my head to view it. :eek: me=stupid

I started with S100, S110 and now, S400. I love the series. Its not bad. There is always something better but Canon Elph had a good track record so far.

I've got a Sony DSC S75 that I've had since 2001. Never had any problems with it yet. My wife and I have taken over 4000 pictures with it already. I don't think I will get a new one till this breaks.

Had both a Canon S200 (gave it to my sister) and a Sony P52 (gave it to my mom). Both were nice cameras, I actually liked the Sony more but if you are looking for a camera that will take a beating, then the Canons are the best choice. Mine survived multiple drops (worst was about 6feet onto a hard floor, I was trying to get into my sleeper on a train), several below freezing trips on a boat, etc before I gave it to my sister.

I also have a Sony laptop so downloading from a MS was much easier since I didn't need to remember to carry around an adapter.

Can't really go wrong either way, but I've had great luck with the digital Elph. Indestructable, beautifully made and takes very nice pics.

I've had my S110 for 2.5 years, and I constantly take pictures with it. I know that I have over 20,000 pictures that I've saved, and I have no idea how many I've deleted.

Anyway, its been very reliable, and the picture quality is better than my Dad's 3.2mp Sony Cybershot.

s10, returned (costly at the time), s330, s400. I love my canons. Altho, I think the s400 could be a little better in the focusing dept. This is probably my last P&S camera, maybe an SD100. Next up, I really want a digital rebel 300D or D30
