Updated AMD driver, now getting contrast effects

Yesterday I updated the driver for my HD 6850 and ever since then I'm getting this new and unwelcome effect as follows:

When bright (white) content is next to dark content, the dark content gets darker. I took some screenshots and compared the color values of a dark area on the screen where I was witnessing the effect and the before and after color values of the screenshots were the same, so the effect is being applied at a higher level.

I taped some opaque material over my display to block out the white portion, then minimized and restored the white window to make sure it wasn't just an issue with my eyes. And even with the bright window completely covered with an opaque material you can see the darks get darker. So it's not my eyes doing it.

I booted into Xubuntu on the same system and the effect was not present, so it's not my display doing it.

Is this a known issue (or a "feature")? I can't find anyone else complaining about it. Maybe AMD thought it would make people happy to have bright things "pop" more on their displays.
