Got my drive today, the 160 GB Seagate. It's weird. I ordered two days ago, 8/23, and got an email confirmation, which included this statement:

You will receive email notification once your
order ships. Tracking information will be available
at that time.

I heard nothing else, but today the DHL guy comes up to my door with the drive! OK. Anyway, the deal seems unbeatable.

That L.A. Times link isn't working right now... the one in the OP.

But the Outpost.com price is showing as:

Price: $ 99.99
After Rebate: $ 49.99

However, at Outpost.com, today is the last day for the rebate! Gotta buy by today.

I just tried on Outpost, and though that link (beginning of this thread) says $99 - $50, the actual price when it shows in the shopping cart is $129 - $50. And then there's tax and shipping (I live in Cali). Fry's in-store price was $119, but they certainly made no mention of the rebate. Oh well.

Had to call it in. Also the rebate is now dead on this. I purchased earlier around 9:00. Hopefully the receipt will have the correct date on it.

I ordered mine online yesterday, the 26th, which was the last day for the rebate.

My cart said $99 - $50MIR. I printed my online invoice, which shows the August 26th date. Maybe you can get your invoice online for phone orders?

Anyone notice a really annoying buzzing from the unit while its idle? I thought seagates were supposed to be quiet? The seeks are pretty audible too, which im fine with. However these buzzing whining sound is really aggravating. Will a firmware update fix it? Is anyone else experiencing similar problems?

I tried to call in, but apparently, Fry's Outpost call center was closed -- an online call center that's not 24 hours? First one I've ever encountered, particularly of this size.

Anyway, I heard that CompUSA has the same deal, good until 8/28, though I think it might be $10 more.
Oh, found the linke, here it is: Seagate Barracuda 160GB, 7200RPM, Internal ATA/100 Hard Drive (ST3160023A-RK)

Pick-up only, so you kind of "save" the shipping.

Actually what annoys me is the noisy data seeks. I think my Maxtor is much quieter but it's not bad. I don't know what buzzing sound you're referring to. Do you have the case open? Mine is closed so I don't hear it.

That doesn't surprise me. I'm in the same boat and didn't try.

Anyone live near a Fry's and want to get one of these and ship it to me? We don't have them in WI. Or can I call up Outpost and ask for the same deal? Not sure if they do that...

Since everyone is jumping on this deal, I figure there is low confidence that the 200GB drive will be back next week?
2 weeks ago, they had this 160 for the same price then a few days later, the 200GB came out for $10 more, now the 160GB is back ... not sure if I should hold up or not.

I'll buy and sell these for $5 profit. If anyone wants them, PM me. I'll make my run to Fry's later tonight.

Drives will be $63.25 + shipping from 95132. (No markup on shipping)

I got the 120, 200 and 160 (in that order), all from Outpost.com. After all adjustments (rebates, free or non-free shipping, tax for CA) the 160 came out the cheapest by far, about $0.44/GB. I got free shipping, but paid $10 more, so it came out to about the same as it stands now (lower price, but no free shipping). One per customer, is the rebate deal, BTW. My only second thoughts is that they are not SATA. I don't know anything about SATA but I saw some posts recently from people saying their HD performance increased very dramatically when they started using SATA drives, so I'm concerned about buyer's regret. :) I got these because I'm trying to make my boxes quiet, but I saw some posts in these Outpost/Seagate threads by people complaining that the drives aren't so very quiet after all. Haven't broken the seals on the drives yet, but did rip off the shrinkwrap to cut out the UPCs for the rebates.

Tell me you're not in Silicon Valley! OK, I see you're in North Carolina. They must have a distribution channel near you.
