Ah! Someone buy me one! :D
Anyways the 5 year warranty should make it hotter. Might want to mention that in the subtitle / title / body.
I believe it does have 5 year warranty.

Look on the Outpost website and search for the drive. It comes up as $109 less $50 rebate. $10 more but still not too bad for this drive. You might try calling to see if they will give you the BM price. Plus it does have free shipping. I may give it a whirl myself. It would be a perfiect upgrade drive for my Tivo.

odd that Outpost lists the drive as $49.99 on the right side of the front page, but $59.99 everywhere else.

I heard on the last 200GB Seagate deal from Fry's that some of the drives were only 1 year warranty. Is there any way to verify which boxes have the 5 year warranty?

Time for me (and others) to go back to Best Buy and get the 110% PM to the this same drive I bought from them last week for $129.99 minus a $40 MIR(check) + 20 MIR(giftcard).

So for me it would be:

$129.99 - 99.99 = $30.00 * 10 % = $3 so I would get back $33.00.

so my final calc is
$129.99 - 33 - 40 - 20 = $36.99 plus tax. Not bad for 160G w/ 5 yr warranty.

JUST SPOKE TO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT OUTPOST: SEAGATE HAS TOLD THEM THAT ALL THEIR DRIVES HAVE 5 YEAR WARRANTIES: IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT THE BOX SAYS!!!

This is from Seagates Website FAQ on warranties:

What products will now carry a 5-year warranty?
All products that are available thru channels with the exception of external hard drives sold thru retail outlets.

Will hard drives with high capacity, SATA, or larger cache continue to offer a longer warranty than other drives?
No, all drives will have a 5-year warranty.

Does the 5-year warranty apply to a Retail Kit purchased after the new warranty date, even if the printed box indicates only a 3-year warranty?
Yes.

Does the 5-year warranty apply to products that customers may have bought just last week?
The warranty is retroactive to all eligible drives shipped after June 1, 2004.

Damnit, damn Sac Bee has to start posting these online. That, or us members will have to work together.

I can get the newspaper, but not until about 6 in the evening when I get off work. I need to see these before I go home from work since I drive right past the frys. :(

SATA is the new format. PATA is the old, regularly used stuff thats often referred to as ata66, ata100, ata133.

Confirmed, 5JSxxxx serinal number of 160GB seagate has 5 year warranty. Just got back from Frys
Sacramento. There are a batch of 3xxxxx and 5xxxxx in the stack. I assumed the 5xxx series are
manufactured more recently so I picked one up and I guessed right. My warranty expiration date is Aug 10,
2009.

Last week I bought the 200GB Seagate starting with 3xxxx serial number and it has 1 year warranty so I
returned that one. The 160 GB is better deal anyways at 35c/GB vs 39c/GB for the 200GB.

Good LucK hunting for those 5 year warranties. Please post your starting serial numbers so we can keep
track of those serial numbers with 5 year warranty.

The ad says that these are 5 year warranty. If someone gets one that isn't, then that is false advertising.

I think I may just buy one since I got one at bestbuy for $69.95 last week and went back after the sale and they are all $129.00 now.

This at $49.95 is a steel even though only ata100.

I was getting 55 or so megs/second with hdparm -t -T /dev/hda which I figure to be pretty good since no drive does what it is rated at. And yes dma is turned on!
