UPDATE: XFX offer me a standby 7900GS while they RMA my 7800gtx

Well, I live in India and paid more than an arm and a leg to get a computer with an XFX 7800GTX 256 alongwith an AMD64 3500 & 2GB RAM.

To cut the long story short, the video card conked out by itself (with no overclocking on my part.) The card had a three year warranty out of which only 1.5 years have passed since I bought it.

The store I bought it from say XFX are out of stock for the 7800GTX, but agree the card needs replacement. They(XFX support) are offering me an 8600 as compensation. I don't know whether its a bad deal with my computer configuration. Someone please tell me.

XFX sucks because in Inda the card costs twice the amount they cost in the U.S and with our pathetic living standards that makes it even more expensive. The card cost me a months salary and the issue is driving me red with rage.

so XFX sucks and I need your help desperately. Also can I go about this matter some other way?

UPDATE:

XFX support called me over and offered me a 7900GS as a standby card while they rma my card (7800GTX) to Taiwan and back. They told me it would take over two weeks to complete the entire process because of the laws of my country(I have already waited for over a month). I tend to believe them because my country's laws suck and therefore I give them the benefit of doubt. I have the 7900 GS with me as a standby card for the moment. Their country manager personally apologized to me for all the trouble and I think they are trying their very best to rectify the situation. I changed the title of this thread as a result of my experience so far. I hope they make good the rest of their promises!


I will keep you all updated because my situation would prove a point how XFX treats their customers.

are they giving you a GT or a GTS?

if you are getting a GTS, the deal is pretty good. if you are getting a GT, well its slightly slower than your card, but you will have DirectX 10 at least.

and yes, we know in india video cards cost twice as much, and you people make 1/10th of our salaries. we have compassion for you, but we cannot do anything about it. its the economy, and the people on these forums dont have nearly enough money to change it.

I'd take it either way..GT or GTS. You aren't going to notice much of a difference anyway.

Unless they are going to compensate you some other way, or offer to give you a "step up" option to the 8800, I don't see that you have much of a choice.

He mentioned that they're offering an 8600 for his 7800gtx. There's nothing about the 8600 on the chart you linked to that I could find.

I thought the consensus was that the 8500/8600 cards were strictly a low to mid-range part, versus a 7800gtx which is/was a high-end enthusiast card. Sucks, but as mesrah said, it doesn't seem that you have much of a choice.

In some cases. Others, it's not nearly so fast.

I wouldn't accept any 8600 card as a replacement. When honoring a warrantee, I don't think that a company should EVER put you in a position that you might be downgrading.
1) It's not your fault they are out of 7800GTXes.
2) It's not your fault the card died.

They should replace the card with the same card, and if they can't do that they should give you an upgrade as a courtesy.

Cards that I would accept as a replacement for a 7800GTX:

7800GTX 512MB
7900GT
7950GT
8800GTS 320MB

...and obviously anything higher than any of those cards...

As far as I recall the 8600GTS is about the same as a 7900GS & the 8600GT is slower across the board ... with that being the case, its a small downgrade from the 7800GTX which performed on par with the faster 7900GT.

A better option would be either a 256mb 7950GT which will be slightly faster then the GTX or to see if you could pay the difference in price out of pocket & get a much faster 8800GTS 320mb.

There have been more and more stories like yours coming up lately and not just XFX. Companies replacing warrantied cards that are no longer available and erring on the side of what's cheaper for them, not better for the customer. I'm not saying they owe you a 8800GTX or anything but IMO, they should at least err on the side of something which is slightly better for you and not cheaper for them if there is no true equivalent that is, and if they care a hoot about good customer service.

Which card? An 8600GT and I would be insulted. A new top of the line 8600GTS factory overclocked card, Core: 730 MHz, memory: 2.26GHz, and I would probably accept.

A recertified 7800GTX is $219.99
Their top end 8600GTS $224.99

Well MSI is nicer... My buddy 7800GTX died and he rmaed it and they didn't have a 7800GTX in stock so they gave him 8800GTS 320MB.

Although the 7900GS is a heck of a lot cheaper than the 7800gtx when released, I would just keep the 7900GS, especially if it's overclocked.

A mildly overclocked 7900GS is just as fast as the 7800gtx, while using less power and producing less heat.

As for 7800gtx vs 8600gts, it depends on what you play.

7800gtx is better:
Doom 3 Engine Games
F.E.A.R
WoW
BF 2

8600gts is better (but in reality both are underpowered):
STALKER
Oblivion
R6: Vegas

I wonder if that is typical of MSI. I will certainly keep that in mind when I am purchasing another card.

Good update. Nice that they offered you a stand in card while they replace your card. I wonder if they have any 7800GTXes left. Keep us posted.

keep the 7900gs, overclock it. if i remember correctly, a 7900gs performs about the same as a 7800gtx (256MB) when both are at stock.

Slower than 7800gtx 90% of the time, but not that much slower. There are certain situations where the 7900 series has architectural improvements that make it faster than the 7800, even with the same number of pipelines and clock.
