I know. I meant to say that it's based off the Q1 engine with bits of code that went into the Q2 engine. They just heavily modified it.Originally posted by: KnightBreed
No, NFS4 is quite correct. The original codebase was from Quake1, but Valve made serious modifications to allow for higher texture resolution, Direct3D support, and 16-bit lighting and texture support.Originally posted by: Jmmsbnd007

Wasn't Half Life based on the Quake or Doom engine?
HL used a hybrid of the original Quake/Valve engine.
By the way, these screens made me mess all over my monitor.:Q

How much do you want to bet that Carmack let out a loud "FVCK" when he saw these screenshots????
You're not the only game in town now buddy!!!!!![]()
At this point, I doubt it. A lot of games look better in screen shots than when playing the actual game. Movement and what not let you see how light affects things, how well(or poorly) the game handles getting close to textures, etc. If Carmack is going to start cursing, it won't be until after he takes a look at the real thing.
Well considering what the original Half-Life was to the industry, I don't think they'll let us down. So Carmack may very well be yelling something right now![]()

HL wasn't a graphical masterpeice though. It wasn't a bad game when it was introduced mind you, but compared to say, Quake II, it wasn't top of the line, it was just below it. Can Valve beat Carmack though? I think they can, but Carmack is tough to beat, so we'll see.

Well, even today, games aren't all about graphics:
BF1942: not the best graphics, but awesome gameplay and replay value
UT2003: great graphics, but has been bashed by just about everyone who has played it

The real question is if the new engine will be as dynamic and moddable (sp?) as the current HL.

The original half-life was based on a heavily modifed Quake 1 engine.
Half-life 2 is most likely being built from the ground up by Valve. Valve was working on a kickass new engine for TF2, but since TF2 was "scrapped," I bet they carried over the engine and modifed it.
