I'm looking to upgrade my CPU and Motherboard real soon. Thanks to another thread I will be getting a Mobile Barton core to replace my 1.2Ghz T-bird. But I don't think my motherboard is design to take full advantage of this newer processor. I was wondering what the best motherboard would be for the Barton core under $100.00?

TIA

Other system Information:
1024MB DDR PC2100
ATI 9600 Pro - Retail
EIDE Interface for all drives
Min 5 PCI Slots
Min 4 USB ports/headers
Onboard Sound
Intergraded Ethernet

Update: I have made my choices thanks to this thread and this article.

DFI nForce2 Ultra 400 Model "NFII ULTRA INFINITY"
AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton Core)
Thermalright "SLK900A" Copper Heatsink

I won't be overclocking it right away but I wanted to have the ability incase I would want to or need to in the future.

Thanks for all the advice,
Quixfire

I still endorse the ABIT NF7-S Revision 2.0.

It has everything you listed as requirements.... last time I being a UK-based person checked Newegg.com, they were selling for $102 so just a touch out of budget. One of the best overclocking boards going..... Ive heard the DFI is better in this respect but I know for a fact that the support from customers is there for ABIT.

i finally got my mobo in, my vote is for DFI. so many features, it does so much more than my old board could. its a pleasure. it has plenty of extra features the Abit doesn't offer,as well as passive cooling and tons of extras in the box.

edit: oh,under $100? errr nevermind.

I have a second Question.

What heatsink would you recommend for the mobile processor?

I am currently looking at the cost of the two different processors and motherboards. Since the mobile comes as an OEM part I will need to add a CPU fan & heatsink to the mobile side of the equation.

I cant help with coolers, as I am using the stock 1 with my non-mobile, however I would definately go with the Abit NF7-s for the MB. I have heard that the DFI is nice, however it is alot more money.

Im using an SLK900A to cool mine.... Id recommend one especially if you intend to overclock. Im kind of out of the loop with cooling so Id recommend listening to a few more opinions before deciding.

Besides the SLK900 series a lot of people like the SP-97 (basically the same but with heatpipes) for overclocking too. With powerful cooling some people can get to 2.7Ghz and one person got his to 3.0Ghz (albiet 2.4v on the core)!!!

abit or dfi or albatron.... get MCP-T SB for "best"....it's a toss up either way. All have 5 stars at newegg customer reviews. All are less than $100. All great OC features.. All are great and review great..

I primarly look for, when boards are so close are color and location of things on board.

Cooler: I'd say the cheaper Thermalright ALX-800 will do fine. Toss on your preferred 80x80 fan :)

One last question please.

Could you provide some link to articles or threads that explain how to overclock the Mobile Barton CPUs?

TIA

Quixfire, I too am a neophyte.

I am currently reading THIS and THIS

Seems like a good site to plunder information.

((first time posting with http added in, so a test of sorts was in progress here and the solution will be deemed readily...)

edit: ah, success.

Lol, that's not the model I'm talking about. I am talking about the Lanparty Ultra II B. That is the best there is.

Lol, that's the model I'm talking about. The infinity overclocks just as good as the lanparty, it just doesnt look as good.

---------------------
Please tell me what thedifferencees are between Ultra infinity and lanparty? I looked and can't find any other than ugly ass colors and kiddie garbage the lan party includes. The meat is identical.

Well that depends on who you are asking. I am a performance over looks guys myself, but the UV reactanctant PCB looks pretty nice in the right setup. They both have the same OC'ing capbilities, one looks better in a mod case. For those who are asking the major differences between the two are the bundled software, (doesn't mean much) and the dual LAN capabilities of the Lanparty (hence the name). The dual Lan allows WAN and LAN at the same time, and can act as a switch as well. The Lanparty also offers RAID 1.5... which after reading the capabilities sound pretty sweet. Speed of 0 versatility of 1.
