UPDATE: walked today.... Graduated college, have my degree...should I do the Graduation Ceremony?

Graduated in December from a local state college, already have my degree (they mailed it to me). I'm deciding on whether I was to do the ceremony or not.

For those that graduated did you do the walk?

Update
so many people I could reply to in this thread. thank you all for your input. I didn't go to my prom either like someone mentioned and I do regret it a bit later in life.

I think I will go. I haven't decided whether I'm going to go further in school but for now I'm taking a break at least, and I think if I don't return I'll need that something to finalize that I'm not a kid anymore. This should do it.

Update 5/10/04
Well, commencement ceremony was today and I walked. glad I did, and I encourage others to do the same when they have the chance.

Had a small party afterwards with family. A good time had.

It is a boring cermony, but there wasn't a chance in hell that I'd miss the opportunity to go there. For people like my grandparents who live out of state, the photos of me on stage are priceless. So is the memory of the event. I'd regret it my whole life if I just blew off the chance to go. Do I enjoy it while I'm there? No, but I enjoy the memories.

Agreed.

Exactly

I'm only walking because my parents asked me to. They're not demanding it (they can't really b/c I'm paying for school) but said it would be nice for them and requested I walk across the stage and get my empty diploma folder (pick up diploma after the ceremony).

I graduated in December in 2002. My parents demanded that I walk. I didn't care either way, so I did. It started raining at the start of the ceremony and my school refused to move into the Performance Arena. I sat drenched waiting for my name to be called because the BS degrees were called last. I had fun even though my new suit was muddy as hell, my diploma was soaked, and my shoes were killing me. I marked it down as an experience that I will never forget. Good luck and CONGRATS (now get a job 😀)

I would, but my guests will most likely be mad at my OUTDOOR ceremony in the desert. Mid June, upper 90 temps.

Again I thank my student association for stealing my fees and putting it to "good" use.

Didn't go, didn't care and I still don't. Waste of time and money IMHO.

Exactly. I didn't want to walk in high school, but my mom wanted pictures (and memories).

When it came time to fill out papers when I graduated from college, I left the cap/gown size and all that stuff blank. When I turned it in, the lady said "you didn't fill this out." I told her I didn't want to walk and they can just mail me my slip of paper. She got mad at me, and I just walked out. To this day, I don't understand what the big deal was.

...then I get my paper, and it is the crappiest looking thing ever. I can probably make a nicer degree w/ some crayons and water colors. I'd be embarrassed to hang that on my office wall. I want to send it back and attach a note: If this is the best you can do w/ the money I dumped into this university, then you can keep it.

I "walked"... although, at NC State's huge ceremony no one actually gets their diploma (we have departmental ceremonies for that). For undergrad, its not horribly expensive... and everyone around you is normally happy (which makes it ok). The only real problem is that it really does consume the entire day--traffic is horrible, just getting around campus is difficult (not to mention, I was on the stage... and had to sit there for an hour after the ceremony before I could get out of the coliseum!). Weather also plays a big role. At a smaller school than NCSU, it might not be as big of a hassle. Plus, if you still have friends in the area (and aren't expected to "entertain" the folks all evening), I'm sure you can find some fun. 🙂

I didn't walk for my masters... but I definitely plan on walking for my PhD (December! *crosses fingers*). I'll have to break out a "Phinally Done" bumper sticker for my car.

Mine too, I was thinking it was going to be thick and important looking. Thanks UW for the over priced books, the long winded lectures, the incompetent advisors and the signed piece of toilet paper.

not that bitter.

i walked.
its a nice thing for the family to attend.
grandparents and parents love that kind of stuff.
i dont regret it at all, i would regret not doing it.
you should go, its only one afternoon.

I loved every bit of college and am proud to have graudated from my university... but I skipped the graduation ceremony and saved the money for a fancy looking frame for my diploma.

Suc partypoopers in here, saying its no big deal, and then voicing profusely against it. Some issues are at hand, no? A break-up? No friends? Picked on?

I took two years off during college, and going to a small private institution, it was very difficult to get back into the swing of things, socially. Still, I walked at graduation because I wanted to see my parents and my grandparents enjoy the moment - do you know how proud they feel, watching their child be formally granted the result of one of the biggest investments made in life?

I'm also graduating this April. I decided to go to the ceremony because I have some family who would like to see me down there. It doesn't bug me, it's gonna make me realize that I'm finally done with university (I don't realise it right now). Kind of like a funeral, it makes you realise the person is dead (sorry about the analogy, but I remember reading a poster at the funeral home on why it was a good thing to have a funeral, and I found that point interesting).

go to it....it is a big thing and later in life you will regret not going, I said the same thing about the prom and skipped it and now I regret not having gone...at least I went to graduation!

HS: I was picked on in PE (I was one of the only white kids in that particular class) in the 9th grade. Besides that, Everyone knew me and liked me (AFAIK). All the teachers liked me. I participated in school govt and NHS. I just felt that it was a huge waste of time, money, and resources.

College: I got along great with everyone in the Engineering department. I just felt I could spend more quality time sleeping than going to that ceremony...

Attending the ceremony ---> sending out graduation announcements to the relatives ----> getting money in exchange for a photo and thank you card

You could just do it like my brother did and enjoy the experience slightly drunk.

Not to mention that they often give away freebies when you walk, like some of the professors books, a placard for your diploma, some school pride paraphenalia, and my brother's school (UC) gave everyone a keychain with a number on the back... ...20 students who walked left with a new car.

my parents are put into a dilemma, I'm going to graduate the same time as my sister. We looked at the graduation ceremony schedules for our schools and they were on the same days last year, so we figure in 2006 of june it will be on the same day too. Now, will my parents go to San Louis Obispo or LA? touch choice for them ain't it?
