update to the Tbird dilemma (threw a rod), bought a new car today :)

so my supercoupe overheated today (the water pump went out), i let it cooled, and i guess the temp sensor burned up because after it overheated it stopped working/showed normal temps.... so i started to drive it to do a couple of calls i had to do today and got about 2 miles down the road from the house and heard a horrible knocking...pulled over, and the there was smoke coming from the back of the engine block... not good...

anyways, so i call my mechanic, he comes and picks the car up and just so happens to have a very nice car for sale (and he owes me 1000 bucks from my old acclude that i sold him) it's a 97 Accord Sedan, with ALOT of mods... H22A4 swap, it has an aftermarket 4 to 2 to 1 header, true cold air intake, full straight through exhaust (looks like 2.5" piping) to an Apexi N1 muffler, a VTEC controller (currently have it set at 3700rpm), it has one of those semi-ricy gauge cluster replacements, that actually looks pretty cool (it's white, with blue lights, and matches the colers of the vtec controller...

has some decent stereo equipment, a panasonic deck, with 3 sets of pre-outs (F,R,SW) and get this! a DVD player mounted underneath connected to the AUX input of the deck, and a flip down screen mounted where the rear view mirror would normally be (totally cool)

it has some decent wheels (i think they are Integra GSR wheels actually, or knock offs, 17 inch, has a tasteful body kit (besides the wing, that's coming off ASAP) and a few ricey stickers, that are also coming off ASAP. but other than that, the car is nice, has a few bad paint spots, and it's dropped so low to the tround that i can tell the front bumper has been scraped quite a few times.... i may need to adjust the springs and raise it a little....im talking its ON THE GROUND right now...like in grass, it looks like it's sitting on the ground....on concrete there's about 3 inches of clearence...

so yeah im gonna get it im pretty sure, im testing it out for two days, and if everything is sound i'll pay the grand difference and keep it 🙂

just thought i'd let you guys know.... RIP Tbird Super Coupe...it was an old car... and we needed a 4 door car anyway, so everything just kind of worked out nicely.

Didn't you already have an Accord pretty similar to the 1997 but with less mods?

But either way, sucks about the Tbird, although the Accord sounds pretty nice as long as it was not beat to shit.

Er, by nice I mean rice. 🙂 I guess I don't mind mods if there is some performance to back it up, but here it sounds like too much for me. But if it's cool for you I say go for it still if you can get any kind of maintenance records or history on it.

He probably paid with coke or codene.

Apexi n1?

That's really loud. My car had an n1 when I bought it...I promptly replaced it with something quieter.

im pretty sure im gonna buy it (give him the rest of the money, he owes me a grand, the car is for $2000, so i've already paid for half of it, and was gonna give the rest to him when/if i decided i wanted to keep it (which im 99 percent sure im going to)

i had a 6g 2 door, this is a 5g 4 door... the 5g's are a little bit lighter...

i just went out and played around in it a little bit, tryed to time a 0-60 run, if i could get a good launch i would imagine it could probably do it in 5.5, maybe a little less... i timed myself tonight at around 6 seconds...but i had to goose the throttle to keep any kind of traction at all through first and second... i have vids of my old 6g coupe pulling a 5.5 0-60, but that was with drag radials...

this car definitely feels faster than the other accord i had before, and handles a 1000 times better... im going to play with the vtec controller some more too, im thinking for drag racing a really low VTEC engage point would be best, something like 3300rpm, although that would cause crazy traction problems... i still have my drag radials somewhere in our storage shed, i might throw them on there, but that makes the car really unsafe to drive in the rain, and this is gonna be a daily driver.

The real question is, will it beat a Vette on back roads?

my 6g swapped coupe with just bolt ons hung with (didn't beat) a C4 vette... we were about dead even until ~110mph or so and then he walked away...and this was on the freeway, with no cars around at all...

i do think this car may have hung with said vette past 110, possible even walked it... it should be making ~240-250 at the crank, and the 5g sedan is lighter than the 6g coupe.

Considering a 1985 Corvette does a quarter mile in 15.5 seconds, one would think so.

Buying used cars from ricers is never a good idea. I'd run away.

he's not a ricer, he's a legit mechanic, whoever he got the car from was a ricer...all he did was the body kit (which looks nice) and the swap/everything under the hood/exhaust

I fail to see how overheating leads to a thrown rod.

waterpump failed, no cooling of block = internals heat up = internals mess up

he hasn't torn it apart yet... it's either a thrown rod, a seized piston, doubtfully one of the head gaskets because the oil wasnt milky or the coolent wasn't oily.... there was extremely loud knocking before it started smoking from behind the motor...so yeah, something internal is fubared
