I guess the question is, does the Colbert persona follow him to Late Night? I would assume so, but that seems like a strange fit for the format of the show. Personally I have never really warmed to Colbert, but clearly I am in the minority.

I think he's actually a decent interviewer, but I would expect either some changes to the persona or changes to the format of the show.

I like him and think he's funny, but I never understood the wild popularity/obsession.

The man likes to pretend to be a true conservative, but it's obvious to anyone with half a brain that he's just a liberal troll.
Uh, yeah. That's the whole point. He's making fun of conservatives by being a retarded, exaggerated caricature of a conservative.

This announcement means the death of his persona. :'(

colbert will absolutely crush fallon in the ratings.

That will never happen. I predict that after an initial spike for Colbert, Fallon will remain decisively in first place, with Kimmel and Colbert waging a fairly closely-fought battle for second (just as Kimmel and Letterman presently are).

Colbert's most compelling feature has been his faux-conservative shtick. He's hilarious without it (as he showed on the Daily Show), but that shtick has been why he's gotten huge in the last decade, and without it... I dunno. I'm sure he'll do fine, but it's a shame he'll have to leave that persona behind. No one will ever be able to do it like him.

CBS isn't talking yet about location, producer or "specific creative elements" of the new show, but Colbert is likely to shed that persona, which would be difficult to sustain in an hourlong network talk show.

Meh I was always a Leno guy compared to Letterman. Interested to see how Colbert will work since I always felt his TV self was an entire persona compared to him as a person.

Never thought colbert was funny, I found his show pretty dumb. He'd better get a whole lot funnier in Letterman's place, or the ratings are going to tank. Looks like Fallon is going to be the king of that time slot for a while.

Yeah, you better be really funny if you're going to replace Letterman.

Colbert is incredibly intelligent, witty, and just plain hilarious. Moving to a major network will pretty much squash that. :(

$10 says he's going to be bland out of character.

I know some people don't like when people get typecast for things, but it's just the way life is. Do what you are good at and stay with it.

Jonah Hill being skinny did nothing for his career.

I was never a huge Colbert fan. I appreciate his intelligence and witty, but the shtick just bored me when watching in any sustained fashion. Could only handle a few minutes here or there. Should be really interesting to see what happens here. I'd love to see him do well, because I think he's a talented and good guy, but I have my doubts in that spot.

Well shoot. I wonder what they'll do with Colbert's time slot.

Letterman wasn't funny at all so I'm not sure why they thought a comedian should take over for him.
