Geeze, on my first wireless network I enabled WEP and MAC filtering the very day I hooked it up. And you say this guy has experience with this stuff?

Yes I also recommend you do a security audit of his house and point out the weak security points like the unlocked kitchen window. Maybe its just me but I'd be a little paranoid about telling him unless you're like really good friends or something.

Use his wireless internet but make sure he can't see you on the network. IE don't share your computer over the network.

If you are friends ... then tell him for sure ...
If you dont know the person well ... tell him

If you dislike him ... than toy with him ... fill up any shared drives with all kinds of useless files (like giant JPEGs renamed to various extensions) ...

Or constantly portscan him ... just to see if he watches for that ... I'd be pretty scared if I got port scanned from my own network ....
