Making sure that no one else has to go through this again is really the ONLY thing I'm hoping will happen. That may be hoping too much. Anyway, I've learned quite a bit more since my post.
1) My winning bid may be approximately $300-400 less than this system goes for retail (it is a brand new system--but far below the highest mHz available now).
2) He already listed this item once before with a reserve, which was not met. The high bid in that auction was approximately $1000. My winning bid was $850. Guess who my competitor was in the auction? One of the high bidders from the original auction. Why he didn't bid at the same level of the original auction is beyond me...
It seems pretty obvious that someone else (probably this other bidder) e-mailed the seller after the auction (and after he sent me the original e-mail asking for payment/shipping information) and offered him more $$$.
The seller doesn't believe in responsibility, and he made up this great story, hoping I would back off (possibly without even giving him negative feedback).
I just don't like that people do this and often get away with it. I want to make an example of this person, in the naive that I can make a difference for someone else down the line.
Thanks again to everyone who posted great information! I never would have thought to request good feedback from him first before posting negative feedback (sly, but called for under the circumstances)
ps...moocat is right--thanks also to everyone who came in here to flame me only to bump the post for the nice people who posted good info!
