could me memory (i'm going to run memtest86 and prime95 but some here have suggested a power supply issue. are there any diagnostics i can run to test the power supply? my son's pc is still under warranty from gateway but getting them to replace parts for a situation like this (pc freezes irregularly playing a variety of games that should run given the system config) is impossible...

thanks!

Besides monitoring voltage via the MB temp sensors (inaccurate), you could check them via a multimeter... but quality of the power is much harder to measure (without thousands of dollars worth of equipment).

Have you considered the problem possibly being the gateway logo on the front... hehe, just joking. My advice would be to complain until they send you a new box. OEM computers aren't built for performance as much as compatability. The problem could be anything from the power supply, to the mobo, to the memory, or all three. Even though the problem only comes out in games, it should have been found in a burn-in test.

But before that you might as well try to upgrade the BIOS, the video card drivers, the mobo chipset drivers (if available), and the sound drivers to see if that helps. You could also try to disconnect any non-essential parts from the system (ie. sound card, addon-cards, extra HD's, CD/DVD, usb devices), and try running the games to see if they're fine with less power draw, which would single out the power supply.

thanks for the tips...he's got an intel mobo in the pc so i'll try that along with other tests.

as for getting them to replace the pc, that's funny....i haven't found them to be overly helpful with this pc...

i'll also see if there are updated drivers, etc for the pc to see if that helps. doubt it's a software problem as the symptoms show up in a variety of applications (all games).

Unfortunately, Gateway's TS is hardly known for being helpful. You might get somewhere, provided it'll be after hours on the phone complaining and getting transferred. Depends if you think its worth it....(seldom is)

update....well i bought 1gb of ram from an atech'er and installed it last night. given that the memtest showed failures i was really hoping that would do the trick. looked promising but then his pc froze again on one of his games that is particularly problematic (lego star wars--he loves star wars..). as usual had to hard boot the pc to get back in...i'm going to try to run the motherboard monitor from majorgeeks and see what that tells me. very frustrating for a pc that is under warranty!

i've tried to get at the mobo before and was physically unable (intel mobo by the way). my only other possibility in terms of parts is the power supply. might try that as my last gasp...

Have you gone through and removed all unneeded software components? Check the startup and see if there is anything fishy in there. Have you considered a format/reinstall?

i've checked startup but will check it again. the pc has had other issues and has been reformatted, about 6-8 months ago. it should be pretty clean--i run antivir, adaware and spybot frequently and my son doesn't go onto the net that much, except for wow. basically he uses the box for gaming and going to a couple of trusted websites (lego.com and the like). when i do spyware runs they are pretty clean.

good suggestion though, i'll check and see what's there and report back.
