I stand to be gifted an 870 in the next few years, but I'm not sure if I want to wait.

By the time I'd make the purchase, I'd be living alone and nobody would have knowledge of where the weapons are stored, so safety is irrelevant. I have been trained extensively in weapons safety and I expect to keep whatever I?m using safety disengaged (I hate pulling the trigger ready to shoot, forgetting that the safety is on), with an empty chamber and a full loadout.

7/9/06 Update:

:music: Woke up this mornin', got ya-self a gun.... :music:

Saw a few really nice shotguns today while just looking around trying to see what was available in my price range, but just as I was about to walk out of the store, I spotted a bananna clip hanging off the rack... I know these aren't exactly easy to get your hands on and I certainly couldn't argue with the price (It was the lowest I've EVER seen for a non-asian one by at least $200)

Walked out with a new Century Arms imported, Romanian AK-47 (WASR-10 HIGH-CAP) Included were two bananna clips, the OEM cleaning kit, the OEM strap and some ammo. Now that I think about it, I'm affraid to admit to anyone that I actually own it because I think there's such a stigma attached to them that admitting that I have one would be like admitting that I'm a certifiable nutjob and providing proof.

What do you think?

I have a 9mm Springfield XD. If I were to add another weapon, it'd be a 12 guage shotgun.

Only problem is doing this indoors you are likely to get it on your stuff, and on other people. But it works, and I'd rather be shot than have to get sprayed again....

A shotgun isn't going to "get on your stuff"? :D

Howzabout those bean bags like Johnny Knoxville got shot with on the Jackass movie?. I wonder why they have become more popular? I'd think non-leathal weapons would be more popular....

I'd have a .40 cal., a .45 can penetrate too many walls.

The shotgun would be my second choice, but I'd take it right down to 18 inches. You want to bring your gun to bear on your target as fast as posible.

Best of both worlds? ;)

The term is less-lethal.

But yeah, I'd rather be shot with a beanbag than a slug or birdshot. :D

None of the above.

I like my Sig 228 and 226s... all are .40

A shotgun is nice, but too large in a close in situation. And it's too hard to easily stash around the house in places that are fast and easy get to.

Being a convicted felon, I'll stick with the German Shepherds and drunken housewife. I pity the fool that gets past the dogs :D

A pistol is preferable for the home, so I'd say an autoloader in 9mm or .40 S&W depending on which you prefer. SIG and Glock make the best auto handguns (IMO), though ther are a number of less expensive alternatives that are good as well.

I do like to have all my bases covered:

Ruger P89T with +P+ defense loads -----> Winchester Defender loaded with 00 -----> AK with 30 round mag ------> FN FAL

If whatever the problem is can't be handled with one of those, I'll be running like hell out the back door. :Q

If you are concerned about things going through walls, you might want to check this site out for some quality test results:
http://www.theboxotruth.com/

That being said, an 870 is a great shotgun and a good 1911 is a good handgun. Both are good self defense wepaons, so its probably down to personal preference.

Change the breed to my old rottie, but much the same. I'd like to see some burglar take him away and use him against me:p

Brick/stone house. Penetration does not concern me. I want the best tool to kill home invaders this side of a flamethrower.

I sleep with my doors and windows open/unlocked, and my car gets parked unlocked...haven't had a problem yet. When I live somewhere I need a weapon to protect my property, I think I'll move. :p
