I was over charged $425 by at&t wireless! Problem solved.....

This first started when my phone started registering as Extended Area. It did not say Roaming.

So I called the CSR and she told me that it wasn't Roaming, and that it was just picking up another carrier. So I asked her if I was going
to be charged more for that. She said that no, it will be like a local call. So, I switched to the local calling plan from the regional plan thinking it will be alright.

I just received my wireless phone bill for $471 for one month!!! I called the CSR again, and she also said it will be a local call, but when I told her about the phone bill and what had happened, she checked and said I didn't make the call in the calling area. I asked how could that be when it still says Extended area, and the last CSR also said it was a local call. She said that if you're not in the calling area, then its roaming eventhough it says extended area.

I don't know what to do, and I'm sure I don't have $471 to spend on a phone bill! I would have just stayed to the regional plan if the first CSR only told me that it could still be counted as roaming charges.

Do I have any options in this? Has anyone else had any experiences like this? What should I do? Please help!

Problem solved.....check my last post at the bottom for the details......Thank you to all who helped!!

Call back and ask to speak to a supervisor, they are usually the ones who are nice enough to change your bill. At least, thats how it was with voicestream, but i also b!tched at her for a few minutes. Had a $550 cell phone bill reduced to $65 🙂

I hope you wrote down her name or at least can you recall which day you had that conversation? If so, call AT&T Wireless customer service tell them you called them on <insert day> and ask which CSR you spoke with.

Sounds like you're royally screwed.

Damn...bet that felt good 😉

Hell yea. My dad was ready to KILL ME though when he saw the bill.

I don't care if it's Sprint, Verizon, AT&T or the latest flash in the pan....THEY ARE ALL CROOKS and LIARS! Most CSRs were homeless last week....get used to it!:disgust:

just keep calling and complaing. I once got a $400 phone bill when I was on dial up because the number I was dialing into was long distance (even though it was in my area code). My parents were ready to kill me. Luckily I sounded pathetic enough that the csr took that off the phone bill. Boy was I relieved.

Yup me too. I had 2 bills of over $400 reduced to nothing because I bitched. How the heck can they charge you long distance rates in your own area code to a place that is 3 miles away? It's ridiculous.

So...Who should I talk to? The CSR, or a supervisor.....?
Im a squeeky voiced college student, and I don't think they'll be scared of my bi*ching. So should I just have my Dad go off on them?
How did you guys, do it? Any tips would be helpful. I want to call them while my dad is reallie pissed at them before he goes off at me.

Call back, and ask to speak to a supervisor. Begin with the end in mind (getting full credit). Start by explaining that you're asking for credit because you're sure that the regional plan is supposed to cover every call you made or received in (name some cities listed on the bill that you we're charged for). Then ask them specifically to give you credit for every LD or roaming toll. Ask four more times, if necessary (though I'm 99% certain it won't be). Though you should never lose your cool, it is not time to be nice, until you are satisfied.

Good luck.

i think u should do it, because then you'll show yhour pops responsibilty.

also, i say u could also do this:
call up at&T, and don't let them know about your $425 charge. just ask them about your long distance question, and if they say waht the original csr said, then bring up your $425 charge. then u wil have just had them admit what they said. 😛

That's exactly what I did with the second CSR, and she said the same thing at first, but when I told her about the bill she quickly added stuff to what she was suppose to say. She said that as long as Im outside my calling area, it doesn't matter if it says Extended Area, its still considered roaming.

So, should I first record what the csr said, then talk to a supervisor?......

<< call and threaten to cancel. 150 dollar charge isn't much in comparison to a 450 dollar bill >>

You still have to pay for the $450 first though. I think it'll be in the contract that he signed when he joined with AT&T, that they have to pay all outstanding bills

WoOOO HOOOO!!!!!

Problem solved!!!!.....Just got off the phone....and after an hour of explaining and BEGing to the supervisor,
She finally rerated my bill........From $471.07 to $73.94
Im still being overcharged $10 because of taxes from the previous bill, and she extended my contract for another year.....
But who cares!!!...........Im so relieved, and overjoyed....I woudn't have done it without all of your help!!!!
Great Job, Anandtechers!!
