using the on-board video?
you would be best to buy something cheap like a Radeon 8500LE but to keep cost down, that should work... just not spectacular in 3D games.

hi,
i think that this looks great for a really budget system. i've built several like this before and everyone has been happy. the only comment is that you may want to move to one of the micro-atx nforce2 igp systems like the shuttle
Model MN31N - Retail
it has usb2 and firewire built in along with a better gf4mx graphics. it's ~$20 more but a very cost effective upgrade imho.
good luck

Hmm I'd try to get a nforce 2 IGP (GF4 MX built-in) with 2x 256 PC(Fastest you can afford) and then just pair that up with the cheapest proc you can get (XP1700). You don't need a floppy, and I think it's a waste to get a CDROM drive when you can get a CDRW for just about the same price after rebate.

How much is the case?

here's a rundown

$70 2x KINGMAX 256MB PC3200 400MHZ NON-ECC DDR DIMM
$48 XP1700
$100 nforce 2 IGP
$20 48/16/48 CDRW rebate special
$60 40gb hdd (if you're good at deal hunting)
_______________
$300 total

20.00 for case.

configure me an NF2 with the 2000+ for <=300$ and i would get him that , and 1gb of memory is more than i have and just that would double the cost. i have to keep it at 300.00 or less for me to make any money, and him to even buy it

Hi, I edited the post above. I think the $20 difference is worth the double memory upgrade, CDRW, and 2 jumps in the video generation gap. What do you think?

yeah but he wants it by next week, and i dont know about the rebate deals. Now if i were to do the rebate deals, i would be getting in on the 40gb HD at OM next week FAR, but yeah i dont know if i could convince him.

(and yeah i know of a better deal than that 60$ hd i can get one next week FAR)

You'd get more performane out of the memory upgrade than the 200 extra MHZ you get out XP2000. Esp if you're running WINXP and SC4.

PS. If your friend won't spend a little more to get himself a half decent comp, I wouldn't even BOTHER. I mean you're already doing him a favor by building the comp yourself thus saving him some money. It's not worth dealing with these cheapskates that will only complain later about his comp being too slow.
