UPDATE- ONE DEAD- Ahh Computer problems...

I've been playing with my computers lately (hey I got them networked)

Computer #1- Decided to re-install 2k. Started setup, deleted partition, created new one, formatted, and after formating 100% it gave me a bad drive- can't do NTFS error.

UPDATE- After wiping the drive in the Fitness tool and tring something (Jumper, Cable, Resurfaced Win 2k CD...), SEVERAL times, it said
"Serial Number JMJA8667
Failure code: 0x75- Defective Device. Component Failure.
Test Date: 03-09-2000 (dd-mm-yyyy)

7500D547"

The HDD manufacture is IBM, May 2000. Deathstar strikes again? Can someone refer me to a good HDD in the HD forum?

Computer #2- Decided to replace case switches/LEDs, (accidentally put an LED on Keylock, BTW doing that will randomly lock keyboard), after resetting BIOS, unplugging everything, plugging it all back in (got the floppy wrong a few times) my slackware boot disk died (my only way into slackware). I would like to have a LILO disk.

Computer #3- Red Hat won't go into X11, after I played with the display setttings. (The defaults worked, but I can't seem to go back)

Computer #4- Yesterday it was locking up, heat issue which I fixed. But it occasionally suspends video card, and won't come back untill restart.

C#1: Sounds like HD is getting weak. Might try your HD manufacturer's disk diagnosis software.

C#2: By having a floppy inserted when you had the cable backwards, you can likely ruin that floppy. That happens. Search Google for 'LILO Boot Disk' to find a source.

C#3: You have to mess with the X86Config files. Pay attention to default resolution, color bit depth, and refresh settings. Or, mess with the install test procedure for X. Search Google for 'RedHat X86Config' and look around for hints. Also, Linux likes good drivers if it has a new or uncommon vid card. You might try a later/latest version of RedHat as they get better with X configs as they go.

C#4: Heat probs do that...lock up. Try adding case fan, slot blower, and maybe opening the top drive bay front panel to let cool air in the top/front. If cool enough, try slightly adding voltage to cpu, ram, and agp...often adding to stability fixing locks. Remember, more juice adds more heat. More moderate heat is ok in most cases as long as it is stable.

C#1- Downloaded IBM (Hitachi) DriveFitTest, ran regular, advanced, format, boot sector format, and bad sector repair. None found anything bad. Then I tried to install 2K. NO GO!:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|

i had similar problem, i had a brand new hdd, tried to install 98, and it wouldnt format, and it was brand new.

so i took it back to the shop where they tested it, and they found it formatted fine!

i suggest setting it up from another hard drive with an operating system, using PartitionIt or something like that, should work.
