Update On The G3 Armada-It Is Now Official, This Fleet Will Never Launch. :(

Well, in the wake of 9/11, my request to install SETI@Home on all of those G3's at work fell by the wayside. I re-submitted my request, but with modifications. I requested that if SETI@Home did not perform to my satisfaction after a test-run on one of those Macintosh G3's, due to not being optimized for their OS, that I be able to try one of the other DC projects out there that would make better use of their idle CPU cycles.

That being said, what DC projects would run good on a G3, that is running a pre-OSX OS?

BTW, please give my SETI@Home Recruiting Thread in Off Topic the occasional ^BUMP!^ 🙂

Im no expert, but I think the rc5 client would be pretty good. PPC chips are considered some of the best for crypto. eccp does not appear to have a Mac (pre-os x) client, so that appears to be out unless you have some coding skills (or someone wants to volunteer).

It's the G4s that completely rock in RC5 (something like 2.5 times faster than even a G3. The G3 is on par with an Athlon if I remember correctly, MHz for MHz).

IIRC, the G3 is the fastest OGR performer clock-for-clock, but I may be wrong. It's been a while since I've looked at the dnet projects.

Link for info on OGR

I would also submit that the OGR project might be more "acceptable" as there is no prize money involved with the project as there is with RC5. On the other hand, if your company is interested in the prize money, that might be an economic incentive to run the project. 🙂

Let us know what happens.

Answer is YES to both questions! 🙂

Link to OGR-25 stats for TA As you can see, we're currently in 2nd place.. right behind the DPC. 🙁 So we can definitely use the help. On the plus side, we are currently ranked #2 in the world! 😀

Link to OGR-24 stats for TA I could be wrong, but my guess is that OGR-24 is over due to lack of activity. Someone help me here? Regardless, we are ranked #1 in the world for that project! 😀 😀

Admittedly, I haven't been keeping up to date on regular OGR stats so I don't know if anyone is doing daily stats on that here in the DC Forum.

Also, the RC5/OGR speed calculator is located HERE. 😉

Hmmm looking at the TA speed page, I would look real hard at OGR!

NWM- OGR-24 is nearly complete, that is why there is very little activity. The way the stubs were passed out causes the early OGR-25 stubs to be computed before the late OGR-24 stubs.

Well, I received an official answer. Unfortunately, that answer is "NO!" 🙁 I will not go into the reasons now, but when I am able to view the events from a distance I will at least have a good laugh at the idiots they put in charge. :| Oh well, I was planning to quit this Fall and go back to Uni full time anyway, so hopefully I can get a part-time job in one of the labs up there. 😉

Sorry to hear about that, Steve 🙁 When you feel better talking about it, I'd love to hear the story about idiots though 🙂

Ok, here's one for you. I was late getting into work today, mainly because I got home at 3:00am due to a stubborn laptop upgrade that I had to whip into submission. One of the things that happened was that it seemed the network all the sudden didn't recognize the laptop (WIn2KPro). A bit strange, but I was tired and didn't think much about it.

Got to work, and everyone that had a Win2KPro laptop couldn't get into the network. They had called the help desk, (just recently implemented at our site) and no help. Once I had a little sleep, I had suspected someone of deleting the cumputer account off of the NT domain.

Sure enough, called Chicago headquarters, they had a temp IT person in yesterday & last night helping to set up some desktops. He was having some problems joining them to the domain, so he was allowed on the network to try to resolve it. Once there, he noticed that there were a LOT of inactive accounts, so being a helpful sort, DELETED ALL OF THE INACTIVE COMPUTER ACCOUNTS.

So, instead of getting my work done, I had to go around today rejoining Win2KPro PCs back to the domain. A lovely time was had by all.

AURGH!

/end rant
