First deal post so be gentle.

This is an update on the previous deal for a great broadband router from Buy.com

First, get the instant $15 off $100 from HERE!
(Go down to the expiring coupons about mid-page)

That'll take you to Buy.com's shopping cart page listing the coupon.
Then, search through Computers > Network > Routers > SMC EZ CABLE/DSL ROUTER 4-PORT 10/100MBPS BROADBAND ROUTER

Or click here for the product page.

Next, add something to ring your total over $100. Cheapest Item I could find is a USB cable for $4.95 here.

So, from the begining: $97.95 (Router) + $4.95 (USB cable) = $102.90 - $15.00 (coupon) = $87.90 w/ free shipping.

Its about a buck lower than the previous thread for this item. :D

Thats a great price for the router...i spent almost 110 after rebates and coupons just 2 months ago... and it works great. Easy to setup... if your using @home, read the documentation closely.

This is really a good deal! This is the model that has a LPT port built it for printer sharing. Works great, too, I've set up 4 of them so far for myself and friends. I was averaging 30-40 port scans a day, now Black Ice and Zone Alarm are dead quiet.

Chemwiz, I am assuming you mean 30-40 outside programs looking for a way into your computer. Please give more details on this.

Jamey,

I believe he was praising the built in firewall of the SMC router when compared to common firewall software. Alot of time those port scans are just misread by the firewall as being a port scan but there are plenty of hackers out there that just go around port scanning anyone they can to see if there is a vulnerability in your system.

The better the firewall, the lesser the chance your gonna get messed with. Anyway, I think this router is great and I plan on getting a similar one once DSL is widely available in the part of my city.

It seems to me that the switch and print server alone are worth the money. The fact that it is also a router, is a bonus.

Jamey, have you ever run Black Ice Defender or Zone Alarm? They show possible attempts at intrusion into your system from the internet (not all the stuff they report is really hacking attempts, though.) I was averaging about 30 to 40 "hits" daily on each machine before I put on my router, now I have a big ZERO! I stopped running them after a couple of days, my guess is that either nobody is getting through it, or else the people that are getting through are good enough not to trip the software alarms. I'm really pleased with it, it's saving me $5/month because I only need one IP enabled, plus I have a print server in the bargain! This is probably the best single piece of hardware I've bought.

do you guys think this router/company is better than linksys?...without taking its printserver capabilities into consideration. I'm thinking about selling my linksys 4port for it. What do y'all think?

btw, good deal bud.

Hehehe... I thought ChemWiz was BSing us about being hit so many times in one day. So I downloaded and installed ZoneAlarm about twenty minutes ago. Already 4 alerts... some weed port-scanning my rig.

Jumping on this deal now. Thx all.

VPN works fine across these, right?

Wik, I ordered it Thursday. I do remember that there was a notice next to the item saying the price was only good until........? I thought it was December 12, but it must have been yesterday. Sorry, thought it was still available.

Not a problem I was just thinking a friend of mine might like this thing. I have a netgear rt311 but am now just using my old system running the linux freesco router. I like the performance of it better.

fraggle: A Router is hardware that shares internet connection. Some routers (like the one we're talking about here) have built-in hubs/switches and firewall.

rickon66:

"There is also a $20 rebate on this item, at www.smc.com "

WHERE is that?

A link to the mentioned rebate would save us a runaround on that site.

The only rebate I am aware of is the "Buy the EZNET-24SW, get the SMC7004BR free! "

Please specify.

The cheapest thing you could find was a usb cable for $4.95.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
My friend got this router and she found a $1.09 pen to push her over the $100 mark. They screwed up the order and sent her a 24 pack of aaa batteries instead of the pen. The Batteries are worth about $15, which made this deal even better.

You happy now?
