Not sure if anyone has posted this already, but I thought that it deserved attention if not.

Mark Segraves, WTOP Radio

WASHINGTON -- You may have heard the stories about Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele being pelted with Oreo cookies, but a WTOP investigation has found that those stories are exaggerated.

The incident occurred three years ago during a debate between Bob Ehrlich and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend on the campus of Morgan State University in Baltimore.

Michael Steele was running for lieutenant governor at the time.

According to numerous reports in the Washington Times, Steele was "pelted" with Oreo cookies, which signifies a racial slur for being black on the outside and white on the inside.

Times reporter S.A. Miller is one of the writers who referenced the incident in news articles on more than one occasion. Miller told WTOP he attended the event in 2002 and saw Steele get hit with cookies.

When pressed, Miller said he couldn't swear in court that Steele did get hit with cookies because he didn't actually see it happen.

On Tuesday, Steele told WTOP that he was never hit with Oreos and said the incident has been exaggerated.

"I've never claimed that I was hit, no. The one or two that I saw at my feet were there. I just happened to look down and see them," Steele said.

Fran Coombs, managing editor for the Washington Times, told WTOP Miller denies ever speaking to WTOP and said Miller did not attend the Morgan State event. Miller did not return our calls.

Coombs said the paper stands by its reports and thinks the Oreo cookie incident is a diversion from the real story of a double standard on racism in the democratic party.

Wonder why Newsmax and the Washington Times didn't run Steele's version of the incident? I guess it wouldn't have wound up the followers enough. The GOP talking points sounded so much better than the reality......so let's run with that instead!! You would think, at the very least, they would INTERVIEW THE PERSON THAT THEY ARE CLAIMING WAS ATTACKED!!!

I'm sure that Zendari and the others will be coming along shortly to lambast the rabid right-wing media for misleading them and the other sheep down the path of misinformation. I mean, after all, that damned Liberal media is to blame for the lies that they spread and this is just a perfect example of the right showing that it occurs on both sides. Hypocrisy knows no party lines.

A bigger problem is that once a story hits the wire, it gets reproduce by the rest of the media; liveral and conservative.

Retractions to incorrect stroies of all types (if ever made), get burried right next to the obituaries.

So he wasnt actually hit with a cookie, the idea democrats would toss oreo's up there in the first place was the act the I found pathetically digusting. This story confirms the cookies were still thrown but not actually hit him? Does that make it all better?

I think you are missing the point of the story here, or trying to turn the story into semantics and dismiss the meaning of the cookie throwing.

Maybe his press secretary ran out of milk and dropped them?

Regardless, all accounts of him being "pelted" (I believe that was the description most used by the right) were exagerations at best and outright lies at worst. Either the WaTimes and the rest of the "right-wing media"© should not be taken as a credible source by you anymore (they couldn't call Steele to verify the story!?.....he's a public official, I'm sure they could have gotten his number from directory services) or you shouldn't be so easily led to believe lies without a little fact checking of your own.

What happened to "it was raining oreos like locust, so thick you could not see through them." I read that a while back, lol. I serious doubt there were any oreos, and even if one person in the crowd did toss a few you should not blame every liberal. As we know from past experiences it could have been a righty that threw them. Remember the guy and his crying daughter with the bush sign?

No surprise, seems like most of the pussies are nothing but big talking arm chair wimps. Remember when a couple of liberal baffoons couldnt even hit Ann Coulter from 3 feet away with a pie?

How unathletic can you possibly be?

But the story of the oreo's being tossed was not a mistake. That is the main story here.

Where do you find confirmation of ANYTHING being thrown in that story? You are so delusional and afraid to believe that your idols have deceived you that you make sh*t up so that you don't have to face reality.

I quote:

The one or two that I saw at my feet were there. I just happened to look down and see them," Steele said.

Did he say that any were thrown and missed? I sure as hell don't see that. They could have been left over from a prom and the cleanup crew did a crappy job of sweeping for all he knows. He just "happened to look down" and EUREKA, there are Oreos. I would think that, even if they missed, he would have stated undeniably, that they were THROWN and missed. He did no such thing.

Have you found any non-right-wing affiliated news source to confirm this yet? The point I made in the original thread is still valid....

Do you think that a debate for Lt. Gov. isn't going to be covered by a swarm of local media? Don't you think that one of the many cameramen that were there would have caught at least ONE FREAKING OREO being thrown? After all, this is supposedly after the debate and he is being interviewed by reporters. Shouldn't one of them seen it or been hit by the misdirected throw?

The answer is a simple one. The event never occured. It is simply a PR stunt to garner votes.

You can believe whatever you want. I am sure those cookies were left over after a previous event and just happened to remain at the feet of a black republican lmao.

You find one story written by a left leaning newspaper that questions the validity of the story and all is better in your world, and to you, that is all that matters.

Wow, you are tough guy.. Throwing tins of whip cream is not really all that easy (not very aerodynamic, excuse my big word), especially when your target is one foot wide and moving (yes, she bolted like a "pussy"). Next time they should just punch her in her Adam's apple.

OMFG, you have got to be joking. Um, you might want to look up the political views of Lance Armstrong.

Doubt they would have the athleticism to get close.
I love the excuses you whip out for them however, just hilarious hahahaha.
Like you have a vested interest in defending these wimps.

Once again, quit dodging, can you show any source that isn't right-wing affiliated that corroberates that a single Oreo was thrown?

I don't want something that states that so and so (read any right wing flunky that has since retracted) stated that Oreos were thrown, I want an account that is definitive. Like I said, this was a debate for the 2nd most powerful position in the state. There had to be many reporters and news sources there. Why did none of them have this account?

Also, just to save you some trouble:

Link

News reports from the night of the Sept. 26 debate make no mention of cookies. The first reference came five days later in an article in The Sun in which Schurick, then a spokesman for the Ehrlich campaign, said cookies were distributed in the audience.

Just admit it, you've been had. You were gullible enough to believe the GOP without doing any kind of background checking. Tsk, tsk.

Oh, I get it! Throwing oreos and pies is consider athleticism to you. I have always been under the impression that things that would be considered athletic would require you to get off your couch.
