Finally got some time to tear it down. Low compression on #8, leak down suggests rings and/or scored cylinders.

So it looks like I'll be needing a new short block. Wet compression test got 11-12.5bar across all 8, so I'll most likely reuse the heads.

Holy fvck that looks like a rats nest, how the hell are you supposed to do anything in there without dropping the whole thing.

Why a new shortblock? Can't hone/re-ring, or go 20 over with new pistons?

Im sure the service manual goes something like this...

To remove exhaust manifold, remove engine.
To remove alternator, remove engine.
To remove oil cooler, remove alternator by removing the engine first.

That engine looks weird in the front. Never seen an engine with the timing chains in the rear before.

Was done just for this model. That year range A4 doesn't have the largest of engine bays so accommodations had to be made to get that 4.2 in there.

That is a beast of an engine. I bet its a PITA to work on with the lack of free space in the engine bay.

Actually funny you should mention that - it's got a TON more room than the 2.7T A6. I have yet to find a part that I can't see/ can reach or can see and can't reach.

Looks like a horror but clearly you enjoy this stuff. I work on my cars mainly to save money, not because I particularly enjoy it, so something like this just looks like a curse-fest to me as I lament the lost hours I could be doing whatever else :)

It's a big-boy sized puzzle. I got it further along today, though the shitty part is undoing the stuff underneath the car. Rear drive shaft, shifter etc.
