Response to previous thread

This is in response to the guys inquiring about HL2. After a busy busy day, I had to get onto a flight and am suffering a little bit from jetlag, so I am sorry I couldn't update you guys last night. My apologies... It is late and time to recharge the batteries due to the combination of no sleep and endless writing. I am trying to get an exact eta for you guys (since the delay is already known), and when I do, I will update.

Take Care,
Andrew Ku

Just change subscriber to forums in the link to view the thread. Nothing to see there though, he is just indicating the thread where he discussed trying to get us a precise release date for at least the benchmark demo is all.

I asked the guys at babbagesand they said it was pushed back to the end of February, the 20th...something. No lie. They looked it up in there system. that's what they told me. I was very dissappointed.

We are just talking about the benchmark, not the whole game(Gabe won't give an exact date on that).

I wouldnt put much faith in old Gabe. Remember this is the guy who 3 weeks ago didnt say boo when people asked about the Sept 30th release date. He knew full well the game wasnt going to be out on that day but pushed ahead with his marketing presenation.

They say Holiday season. Well that could be anything from Halloween to next Labor day.

Though I wouldnt be surprised if it showed up for Christmas. It also wouldnt surprise me to see it show up sometime in Feb\March.

Funny thing is their entire presentation was all for nothing as by the time they get the game out the door the newest generation of cards will be there to greet them.

That is right, if they do leave it until Feb/March 2004, there will have been absolutely no point them saying how rubbish nVidia's card was, because NV40 and Ati's R400 will be out...... or at least very near........ it won't be an issue anymore.

How would it not be an issue anymore?? Are all of the graphics cards previous to the NV40 / R400 lines gonna suddenly disappear or everyone magically upgrade. Yes, it will not be as important, but it will still be good to know that if that was 'the way it was meant to be played', nvidia would be playing alone.

It will still semi be an issue. The point about shader day was to show ATI's product over Nvidias and get people to go out and buy ATI products(preferably 9800 Pros\XTs). Well if the game doesnt even come out until the next generation of cards. All of that marketing crap Gabe Newell spewed was BS. Just like him saying the game would be out on the 30th. At that point the cards they tested will be middle of the road cards and 50 FPS is expected. And to be honest by then Nvidia may have got their optimizations working and the performance difference will be minimal.

If that weblog comes to be true then shady day was proven to be a marketing sham. Then comes Doom3 which apparently is something like FX ~ 60 FPS, R3.xx 35FPS.

Which card suddenly looks more attractive? :)

I only hope Nvidia makes a card in the NV40 that is more conventional so we dont have to wait for JIT compilers in the drivers and close relationships with the devs to get something that is as fast as an ATI card.

The update is that we will be lucky to see this game by the 1st QTR of 04. The leak of the source code is a major set-back. Five years of hard work has been exposed and now they must implement countermeasures in a 2 1/2 month time frame, not going to happen.

they can add things for the MP and the SP likely will not be altered. That wouldn't take too long.

Yes I am aware of that but generally when source code is released to the community it is when a game has become obselete, that is not the case here. Did you see the video with the Strider interacting with the building and other obstacles, well however they were able to do that is now exposed for their competitors consumption.

well, if someone is good enough they can do things like that without a leaked source

Yes, but it took valve 5 years to do it. And it should take someone else quite a long time also. The difference now is, someone else can look at the source and do it in maybe 5 months, or less.

arent' most inovations in game design patented? Wouldn't games utilizing ANY similar coding paths or object construction be subject to legal penalty? Just seems that if it is intellectual property, that anybody attempting to employ it would be at high risk, and I can't see any game developer doing it.
