*UPDATE Nov 4!!* I need advice on a REALLY CHEAP dvd player.

StageLeft

No Lifer
Bought this $34 play from Koss. It's been awesome until about 30 min ago I finished a movie and let it run until the end of the movie, where it stopped on the final frame. Now the bitch won't turn on. The light goes on, but it's screwed. I have no receipt. Would sears likely have one on record or do I now need a new dvd player?

*UPDATE* Fvck it. What's a cheap dvd player I can buy that will play everything? I want svcd/vcd, standard dvds, +rw/-rw formats. A bonus would be divx and all that crap too. I'd like to stay local; bestbuy, circuit city, etc.

*UPDATE NOV2*

What fvcking luck. That first koss player I bought had bad component vid (it's all purple), so I got a second one (earlier this year). My philips 642 just came in the mail and the same damn problem. fvck, now I have to return it!!!!!!!! I could stick with s-vid, but I don't want a tarnished player.

If I fill out the return stuff on Amazon, will they charge me anything for a replacement?

*UPDATE Nov 4*

Well, the new one came, and same problem. Bad player? Unlikely. Bad tv? But it damnwell worked before. So, I went to menu and changed video output from svid to the other one (now it works!!!!!). Obviously, I'm rather dumb. I won't deny that. However, in the past the two video units I've used on this tv have never required a separate selection to identify how the output would be - and since this one did crank out with a purple, I just figured it was broken. Ah well, I have to keep my lovlies updated.

I have tested with a burned cd and dvd+rw with various dvixs and so far I'm thrilled. It's tight 😀

sounds like you got what you paid for
I know, but seriously this thing kicks ass. It was about $34 and otherwise it's been awesome and plays all kinds of media! Also I pretty much never have electronics break. I don't know why this isn't working...

It should have a one year gurentee.

I had an Apex dvd player die after a year. The manager at Wal-mart let me exchange it for a diffrent one. That one died after 9 months. Again they let me exchange it. That one died after 3 months! i got my money back =) and baught a nice 5 disk DVD/CD changer.

After 9 mos., Sears shouldn't be responsible for a broken player. I believe their return policy is 60 or 90 days. Plus, Koss probably offered a much shorter warranty - (e.g. 6 mos. labor and 1 year parts) - so they'll jab you if you need to get it fixed.

Darn. I called sears. 60 days on this bad boy. Well hell, I really liked this dvd player too. What's making these things die? I've bought many really sh*ty electronics in my life and none of them die. Plus this one swallowed a disk, so I'm opening it now. I hope I don't need to go an buy another dvd player 🙁

You know though, I'm not mad. $34 for 9 months of play is fine with me. I'll get another one I guess 🙂 Probably another one of these if they have them 😀

you ask why they die?

this is why they die. they know people will shell out another $35 for another one in 6-12 months.

So it's got a timer or something? 🙂

Hmm, maybe I'll splurge this time and drop some real money, like $49.99

It does seem like they put timers in some of the cheap electronic componants. I have had a few apex DVD players die in about a years time. though i have a cheap one in my office that is about 2 years old.

Here's some advice. Head to Circuit City and look at their selection of open box DVD players. Pick something that normally sells for $99, but is being sold at $69 or even $59. Then, see if CC will knock another $10 or $15 off the price - usually they will. This will get you a much better player for not so much money.

Hmm, that could be the ticket, or tiles2tech's open box idea. I've always had bad luck with open box though, as I hardly ever see any 🙁

Hot damn, that philips is getting great reviews. I presume it runs -RW/+RW? Maybe I'll just oder that bad boy. I'd like to not have to convert my avi files to a DVD format...

Phillips is a cheap one. For like 70 bucks basically everywhere that can play divx too.

Otherwise, go to the for/sale forum and pick up some old 1ghz computer for 200 bucks and svideo out that sh1t.

the philips player i posted about is pretty good and the price is great. check reviews and see for yourself.

I can vouch for this player, I've had one for about 6 months. It does play -/+ RW. I won't play your XviD if it's encoded with Qpel, and custom matrices and super-high bitrates cause problems too. Other that that, all divx works, even non-profile encoded stuff. Xvid works if it was encoded with an ESS profile, AC3 audio works if the interleaving was set correctly. Everything else works awesome. It has surprised me time and time again by playing stuff that it's not supposed to be able to, or at least is not listed as supported. The firmware is upgradable as well.

I agree, my experience with the Philips units has been very good.

Sometimes I wonder what people expect from a $35 flaming POS.

You could always buy a new one and put the old one back in it's box and take it back.

But that would be wrong. 😛
