***UPDATE***MAJOR HARDWARE MALFUNCTION

ok....my rig was working perfectly (see link)...then i bought another stick of ram....now i have 256 rdram.

i use 2 HD.

as i was doing a file transfer, the maxtor gave out on me. it said "your system had malfunctioned, call you hardware vendor"

ok so i reboot and do what i was doing b4....*BAM*..same message...so i run scandisk and i get 32 bad sectors.

i was like "ok bad HD.....get a new one under warranty...no prob"

now, when i am doing a lot of stuff...listening to music, surfing the web, and downloading songs, i get a blue scree that says
" YOU SYSTEM HAS HALTED, CONTACT YOUR HARDWARE VENDOR"

the new drive i am using is a ibm 60gxp.

i think it has to be the ram......what are the chances i have 2 bad HD? the maxtor is about 12 months and the ibm is 3. only used for 1.

HELP!!

ok here's the deal.

i took out the new stick and BAM!!! it happens again!! =( could it possibly be the IBM 60gxp? that thing is brand new!!

btw, my cpu is a p3 slot 1....not pga. it was one of the first 1ghz cpu's to come out so i think it moght be an overclocked 900 or 933.....you get the picture.

ANYONE KNOW WHAT"S GOING ON?????

Yish... thats bad... are you overclocking your FSB ?
If so, try putting everything to normal and retest your system.

no over clocking here....everything is as stock as it can be.

i think it can be one of two thing....ram or HD......the cpu has never cuased any problems.

HELP!!

i know....i am in denial.....i dont want to believve that my $60 shipped stick of ram is bad....i hate opening my case to take out old sh*t....i love opening it for new stuiff however =)

Those aren't Windows error messages that I've ever seen...sound more like something the vendor has installed. What kind of computer is this?

yup..i was running a single stick with one crimm....then i said " f-it, imma buy another stick!" its pc800 with ecc.....i figured i'd buy a matching pair......kingston to be exact....what a waste!

i should have bought 2 matching sticks of non ecc.

MATT, if it was the HD, i thought GREAT....that was an easy problem to fix...it turns out now that i got a copletely f-ed up system =(

I still don't see how returning a hdd is easier 😛

I'd go to IBM's website and get their disk analysis program, that should tell you if it actually is the drive. Takes the guess work out of your problem. It sounds like it might be a short. I'd re-seat all the cards and rimms then re-check the cable connections.

good thing the weeekends here cause i will definitely do that!! thansk!!

any other ideas/suggestions???

So, did you contact your hardware vendor? I'm sure they can help you! 😉

Like suggested, go back to your previous state and try again. Also check memory timing. If you have different types of ram, you may need to go to the slower one. Try un-overclocking (run at default speed). Check IDE cables and power cables. Did you hear anything crack when you installed the ram? Maybe you cracked a cold solder joint.

<< Maybe I fell asleep and didn't know it but....................since when do Pentium III's run with Rambus memory? >>

thje i820 and i840 chipsets from intel where the first to use rambus for the p3.

I guess I did fall asleep. Thank you.

Damn, I've been getting way to involved building AMD systems. Now I have to start watching Intel againl.

The EXACT same thing is happening to me, and it's driving me CRAZY! I ALSO have WinXP and PIII and 256MB Rambus, could that be the common factor? Please help, this seems to be happening at random times and i dont know how to fix it!!!!

dont the p3s with rambus run without fans?? (like ones sold by dell, gateway)

i know my old dell had a fan and the lil plastic thing that forced the air on the HS, so maybe the hs is prying off??i had a p3 with rdram nice stable lil boy..

just a long shot, since you said you were doing a lot and you got a halt

i figured out what my problem was....THE FRIGGIN NIC!!!!!!

i messed with the ra, (rearranged, took out...blah blah) and that didn;t work.....then i relized it only happende when i used the net.....tried hammering my system while not on line, ...not a even a flicker!!! stupid kingston nic.!!!

The IBM 60GXP series hard drive is defective a large percentage of the time, granted not as high a failure rate as the 75GXP but quite high nonetheless. It is a part of the big class action lawsuit. I really do not have such a hard time believing it could be your new hard drive for this reason alone, although I would have checked the new ram before I ever sent the old drive back, but I guess that's just me.

[EDIT] Oops, didn't notice that the problem had been resolved.

I don't have IBM hard drives (I have a WD and Maxtor). And I don't think its my NIC, this happens even when windows is booting (and at any random time while its running). My p3 1ghz has a dual fan + heat sink, and I've been running this exact same system on WinME for about 8 months without this problem. I've updated all of my Sound Card & Video Card drivers, i dont know what the mofo is wrong! Help!
