OP, I'm sorry that it didn't go better for you, but you NEED to get another job now. It's clear that your Aunt does not have the capacity to be professional and run her business independently of her feelings. This does not bode well for the longevity of her company.Business sometimes requires that you make decisions that are not the best for you personally at the time, but in the long run will benefit your company (and you). Managers that are unable to make these decisions are destined to fail.

I'm not saying that you need to alienate yourself from your Aunt, but you do need to find other employment, whether it be with her friend, or someplace else, the situation is a powder keg just waiting for a spark.

Good luck.

What a b!itch.

I'm curious though. Did you ever approach her about not making the money you wanted/ needed to?

Definately time for a new job now....

What did the other guy say? Does he still want you to work for him? I see why that part at least wont work out, unless I am missing something

i cannot work for him because it is frowned upon having one agent hire anothers staff.
if he did that, she (my boss) could take away his entire agency.

Kind of what I was thinking. It sounds like the bridge between you and your aunt has been torched. Time to jump ship and work for the other guy. Company loyalty means jack these days. It is all about looking out for #1.

Actually, she did it to Lola and the other two people in the office.

Even more of a reason to leave then imo.

A company/ boss that doesn't value it's employees is a risky place to be in.

She is living it up and then cutting the bonus of those who do the most for her. Even though management is very important but cutting bonus when business is on the up is just wrong...

Well, it sounds like her Aunt isn't doing much managing anyways. If you take 60-70 days off per year you really aren't in touch enough with your business to expect to run its day to day operations. It sounds like what the OP's aunt needs (and maybe the OP already fills this capacity) is a business manager that will run the company for her and cut her a dividend check once a month or something.

How could she take away his entire agency?? And what do you mean "frowned upon" we have a free-marketesque economy based on supply and demand. It sounds like your Aunt has a case of sour grapes, especially saying things like "If I can't have her no one will" That's just crazy talk. On a final note, any employer who places all or most of their chances for success on the shoulders of a single employee is destined to fail. Employees do not have a duty to any particular company, they have a duty to themselves and their goals. Again, I hate to beat a dead horse, but if your Aunt doesn't realize this she is in a LOT of trouble.

Screw her. Quit now and find a better job. Any person that is that greedy and malicious doesn't deserve to be in your life.

If that is the case, how in the world did the other person ever think he could hire you in the first place? And who says your boss could take away his agency? How long does this supposed restriction last - for life? Does everyone who works in the insurance business have to find another career if they quit the agency he/she works for, since working for another agency is forbidden?

I guarantee you there are ways around this, if such a restriction even exists outside the mind of your aunt. More details necessary on this alleged restriction.

Since you can't work for the other agency anymore, maybe bring up a report from salary.com that shows that you're underpaid?

Quit and let your aunt's agency fold. Then you'll be able to join any company you wish.

Even in cases where non-competes have been signed, the courts have upheld the right to work, and even thrown out non-competes that have exceptional longevity.

I believe the pressure is coming from Lola's Aunt's and her potential employer's boss, who is the same person. I'm sure it has to do with stealing customers.

If she is your aunt first and wanted what is best for you, she would not block this opportunity. Lola, time to show some backbone and call her on it. Bring it up to her in just that way, and don't back down. She owes you some respect as a valued employee too.
Downside is she fires you on the spot, causing you some financial difficulty. Hopefully you are prepared a bit for that.
Upside is she quits being a spiteful person and starts being this aunt she claims she is, and you can move forward.

since she wants to play hardball, tell her to match what the other guy (unofficially) offered or youre outta there. no reason to take her crap because she cant treat you like dirt any longer.

just have to tell your aunt that you have been a great employee and just wondering what the normal salary for someone who does your work is. that should calm her down some.

it might be too late for that ;)

Lola do you have a backup plan? if not, don't fret. you were getting underpaid, and everything happens for a reason. It's a learning experience

In what way is this not offering you a job?

LolaWiz, Based on what your aunt is doing I stongly think she is taking advantage of you.

If "you are my neice above all else, and I want what is best for you" was true, then she would be asking you, not telling you. She sure as hell wouldn't be accusing her friend (who is her competition) of doing sh!t that you said didin't happen.

Good luck.

So the other agent works for Lola's Aunt?

Sounds like time to move on:disgust:
