Right now i have a Geforce 2 GTS!!! Yes i know i know... :D .

Now when i look at the GF FX 5200 the 80$ price tag is great but im wondering how great the performance increase would be from my current card? Would it be worth it?

What other cards do you suggest. The FX 5600 and the Ti4200 and Ti4600 look very nice.

Thanks

Btw my budget is around 160$

A fx5200 would definitley not be a worthwhile upgrade. In fact, you'd probably see next to no improvment over your current card. A ti4200 for $100 is better, and better yet is a radeon 9600pro for about $150.

;) The FX5200 is about the best budget buy but compared to the FX5600 and Rad9600 it is pretty awful and hence the bad press. The FX5200 is better than the GF4MX which are slightly better than the GF2. There would be an improvement but not really enough to warrant the upgrade. So as said try to save up for something tangibly better, GF4TI4200 is an excellent option so long as you're happy with DX8 and 2xAA+4xAF. If you want more or plan to keep the card a while look to the FX5600ultra or Rad9600pro, DX9 and AA+AF to one side they're about the same speed as a 4200 but are that bit more future proofed. You really should have at least an AthlonXP1800+ to really benefit from these cards so be sure the rest of your system is up to it.

I have a Athlon 2500+ Barton

17" LCD

What kind of difference is there between FX5600 ultra and 9600 pro, in your guys opinions? Which one would you rather have??

Thanks

;) I'd say it's VERY even when you compare the new v2 FX5600ultra and the Rad9600pro. It's a lot of give and take but overall they offer the same perf and abilities although 9600pro is usually cheaper. You could save yourself some money and get a GF4TI4200, it offers almost identical perf but simply lacks DX9 and high AA+AF abilities.

There's two versions of the fx5600 ultra. The old version was considerably slower than a 9600pro. In fact, it was slower than a ti4200 in many cases. The new version 2.0 however, is much improved, and is relatively equal to a 9600 pro. Unfortunately the new ultra 2 costs considerably more, somewhere around $190 I believe, so you're better suited with a 9600 pro.

As much as I hate quoting toms hardware. Checkout these set of benchmarks. 5600 Ultra is better than the 9600 Pro. It looks like the 9600 Pro is more like Ti4200-4400 speeds at best.

I remember seeing a quote in one of their articles, that although the Nvidia led in certain of the benchmarks, you could understand why when you looked at the output , the Nvidia card is simply "doing less" to give you a quality image at similar settings.

I think you are at a great advantage point with your current video card. Upgrading to anything will show great improvement.

If you trust Nvidia, get a 4200 .
If you trust ATI, get a 9600 pro .

Since you are a current Geforce user, I could see why you would want to stick with Nvidia. So the ti4200 will be your best bet. The 4600 and 4800 are just over clocked versions of the 4200. So no point wasting money on the same video card.

ATI 9600 will give you better performance with filters. Meaning it can straighten out jaggies across objects with straight edges in games and detail textures without making the game sluggish.

The Ti4600 runs at like 180 but this card which is 4800 is like 160... i mean the higher the number the faster right?

Someone please explain this ,

Yes, they're compatible. Also don't worry about the performance difference between the two, it's extremely minimal, which many people don't realize.

A 9600 pro should have more longevity than a ti4800, mostly because of the dx9 features. But, a ti4800 is still going to be able to play all those dx9 games, minus those new dx9 features of course. A large part of your decision probably depends on your use of AA and AF. If you like those features the 9600pro is going to be the clear choice, as it takes a much smaller performance hit than a ti4800 with those enabled. I haven't been that big of a fan of those features, but I was playing around with them recently and it does make a noticeable impact on the image quality. On many games with my ti4200 you can only put those features on low levels, or not at all without severly affecting the frame rate.

Judging from the fact that you're still using a gf2, I doubt you upgrade your video card regularly. So a 9600 pro is probably a better choice. You should be able use it a little bit longer I believe.

Which card do you think will be better to play upcoming games like HL2 and Doom3??

Or should i just wait until doom3 comes out and buy a faster card for less money... BTW when is that game coming out anyone know??

-Rich
p.s I love those 2 game series!
