ewww, projection! Why not plasma😀!

Plasma is overrated. The black levels suck.

They are getting better. But, for the price? Not worth it imo. I'd rather find a good, used, front CRT projector.

True dat...not to mention the lifespan issues with current gen plasma.
I'm waiting until plasma drops in price and rises in quality/features.

Not much HD choices down there right now. A few of your locals have DTV transmitters up, but I can't tell if they're transmitting HD yet.

That, or DLP. I'd pick even a single chip DLP over Plasma anyday, even if money wasn't a concern.

Nope...altho we've been considering a satellite option.

Damn I hate Comcast so much I feel like going down there and setting fire to their office!

BTW: What are you using to check for HD broadcasts? A link would be nice, my man! 😉

Birmhingham stations are up, though, eh? And 45min (assuming <60 miles) is definitely doable with the right antenna (Channel Master, Televes, Blake)

Yeah, it'll have to be rooftop, though. That's kinda scary in an area with a lot of thunderstorms. :Q

DLP is ASTOUNDING!!!
Front projection was something I considered, but the additional wiring needed wasn't feasible for this room.

Pffft...just properly ground it. Heck, I didn't have mine grounded and it survived a full year up on my roof in an area rather devoid of trees (new subdivision). And storms...yep....had quite a few of those.

BTW, once picked up a station from Tuscaloosa from here. Was a good tropo morning that day! 🙂

I'm getting DirecTV right now. Dish and DirecTV are about equal when it comes to HD choices. The only difference is DirecTV has HDnet, and Dish has Discovery.

DirecTV:

HBO-HD
SHO-HD
HD-PPV
HDNet

Dish:

HBO-HD
SHO-HD
HD-PPV
Discovery-HD
HD preview channel (Useless)
CBS HD (Only available to people in "white areas" or in areas with stations owned by CBS corporate (LA, NY and Boston, I think)

Yeah, DLP is nice.

FP is only good in a room you can make black as night. And it does better if you can paint your walls a dark color. In reality, FP is only good for dedicated HT rooms or basements.

I have picked up stations far away before due to skip. Rare though.

Exactly! 🙂

Well...I must admit I'm 3-4yrs away from that dream (when I build my next house)...but...can't keep from dreaming!

BTW, both DirecTV and Dish are supposedly coming out with a number of new HD channels, including ESPN-HD.

But that's just rumour... We'll have to wait and see.

HDNet has broken up into three or four channels, now. Hopefully, Dish and DirecTV will carry all of them.

Es are more rare than tropo. Tropo can be rather common, esp. in the deep south.

Hmm...today would have been good even here.

Hepburn Tropo Forecast

Oh...that's tomorrow morning..hmm...damn apt-living. I'm stuck with only an attic installation and I'm a good 200' - 250' lower in elevation than the house I used to have.

It is less than 60 miles by road, but I wonder how much less it is by line of sight. Anyway to check that?

Yeah...shoot...umm...hang on.

How Far Is It

Distance between Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States and Birmingham, Alabama, United States, as the crow flies:
47 miles (76 km) (41 nautical miles)

Easy!

Umm...it's actually 50. I live near Tuscaloosa, but not in T-town proper.

Well, that's just a rough guesstimate. The tower locations will vary. You can get to the tower long/lat by drilling down thru info at W9WI

Congrats, Tallgeese! But I seem to remember you dealing with Mrs. TG about the bigscreen something like six months ago.. took a while to get her resistance whittled down, eh?

/me = jealous (but not too much, as I sit here with my XBR WEGA)
