i just got a new linksys router flashed to the march 2002 firmware update. i am pretty familiar with this router because i have another right here that i am connected online with...but i got this other one for a friend, and i cant get it to access the internet in any way/shape/form.

i can connect to the actual router via 192.168.1.1 in the address line, but nothing past that

does it have to do with the fact that i am on comcast cable? is there something special im not doing to it that now needs to be done but didnt back when i first setup MY router?

any ideas at all?

maybe it isnt compatible with my cable modem....i got the modem in like 1995 or 1996, the original @home cable modem, its ghetto

thanks

Sounds like something's wrong with the router itself. Like Oakenfold asked, did it work before the flash?

Yeah, like the others said, a bad flash. If it is new, I would just go back to the store and exchange it.

If I understand correctly you are testing this router out on your cable connection, but planning on using it at a friends. I believe your problem is that your cable provider uses Mac addresses in assigning IPs. Try cloning the Mac address of your router into the new router and see if you can get the new one to connect to the internet. In my opinion this will probably fix your problem, if not it was worth a try.:)

i purchased the router here on anandtech, and the guy i bought it from isnt unwilling to help, i just figured you guys would know a little more

he said it worked perfect when he had it, and i believe him that it really did

i just think its a problem in my settings somewhere and i cant figure out what it is. i tried all this morning at my house to get it to work and nada. if i were to copy my mac address to the router and bring it to my friends house, wouldnt that make comcast think it was providing for my account in two different places? that might create a problem.

but just to reiterate, it worked perfect he said with the new flash and i dont think it has any problems

help please :(

thanks so far guys

crazychicken if you want to contact me directly via IM I can try and help without clusterring AT. Are you trying to connect this router (during testing) at your place or your friends place? If you are at your friends place you need to clone the MAC address of the computer currently plugged into the cable modem onto the router.

have you tried doing a hard reset on the router? could be a setting that the previous owner put in there that's preventing you to get online. ive flashed my linksys befsr41 more than a few times, and it always retains the previous settings (though the manual states it goes to default).. worth a shot to start from scratch..

holding the reset button until the red Diag led on the front panel turns on and off completely. i think that's like 15-30 sec.. that restores factory defaults and clears all the routers settings

thanks to the anandtech fella's and ladies! all of your advice was useful and every little bit helped! all i had to do was reset the cable modem, reset the router, set everything to dynamic, plug in the Mac address, and bam...internet connectivity :) :)

thanks again guys and i hope everyone has a nice night
