Just to clarify, this is being booked through United Miles. The difference is 20,000 points (which I equate at a minimum to 1c per point/mile)

Probably deserves its own thread but has anyone else found that United has the worst fleet in the world? I just flew San Francisco to Frankfurt and they put me on a plane from the 1990's with no in seat entertainment or movies. The staff was miserable. The passengers were miserable. They tried to make it up with 25 cent icecream sandwiches but it just wasn't cutting it. My flight to San Francisco had me in seats that were staggered so that the inflight entertainment didn't line up with my seat. The seats were torn. They blamed it on a mechanical problem so our delayed flight needed another plane pulled in I got the impression they brought it in from a junk yard.

When I compare to other airlines from Asia, BA, or Ethiopian Airlines for that matter it's just a giant joke to fly with United. They're always late for me. They always switch my reserved seats, they always fuck something up. I'm never flying them again.

I used to fly Continental from the states to Narita. That seems like a dream now. The newly refurbished United 777 business class that United has gone with is awful. I'm in Japan currently and flew over on an ANA 777 with by far the best business class offering available, at least from what I've personally experienced. I'll be flying back on the United variant and have no idea what they were thinking. Never again.

So yes, randomrogue, it has (unfortunately) been noticed. :(
