*UPDATE* I'm terribly sorry for offending any quasi-Irish folks here :( Honest!

3rd generation American. But neither my father's nor my mother's sides really married outside their ethnicities until mom and dad's generation. Mom's family was strongly Anglo and dad's was strongly Saxon. A lot of my family history is tied up in the history of those ethnicities. My great grandfather was one of few German-Americans who were alowed freedom from scrutiny during WWII, largely because his son-in-law (my grandfather, a 1st generation American of 100% German descent) was fighting in the US Army Infantry.

Of course I consider myself an American first and foremost, but I certainly hope that I never lose sight of my family's history.

Umm, if your blood lines don't count... then what does?

I'm sorry, but I disagree. You can at least say you're an Irish, German, whatever.. decendant.

Speak for yourself, I can drink you under the table. Wait your right I'm not an Irish sissy I'm 3/4 Russian, nm.

I can't stand the wankers 'round here who's great grandparents were English, and then whip out St. George's Cross during World Cup.

You know, people who're English once every four years.

im american. but americans will never accept me as american. i dont have blue eyes, blonde hair, tall noses, and white skin. sure, my nationality is american. sure, they will acknoledge im american, but they will never view me as american. they wont see me the same way they see caucasions. so skoorb, please calm down. we need something else to identify to.

I was born in Taiwan, but I came to the United States when I was 4 months old. Both of my parents are Taiwanese and I've visited Taiwan a few times. I speak English and Mandarin (no Taiwanese 🙂), but I can't read or write Chinese. I grew up in a predominantly white, conservative, suburban city... What am I?

Assuming you are a legal citizen of America. You are American of Taiwanese decent. The same as us pale Scott's/Irish folks are American of Scott's/Irish decent.

whew...I'm glad I'm not Irish. My parents would have a lot of explaining to do after all these years.

<--Parents = Chinese. 😉

so then skoorby you tell me this:

i was born in Iran, left when I was eight months old and have been in California ever since, what am I considered in your book?

A candidate for Big Brother's watch list!!!

(This is a note so you don't get the wrong impression: I am writing this because I fear the direction the gov't is taking, not because I believe all mid-easterners are about to hop on Airplanes and fly them into the goddamned liberty bell.)

I'm part irish and a bunch of other stuff.. yeah, it's in my blood so it's there genetically. I'm not irish by culture though, that's for sure. I'm as north-americanized as they get. By Skoorb's definition I would be strictly Canadian, and my heritage is promptly dismissed. However, some people who've never even seen me before, would refer to me as "that irish guy". Okay? So I guess I should start arguing with them that I'm not IRISH right? IM NOT IRISH GOD DAMMIT! I'm CANADIAN OK! Yea... ok then!

😛

(stupid thing to argue about in the first place...)

Let's get something straight here and now. Let us put it out in the open.

Where were you born. The US? You're fvcking American. No - stop. You are not Irish. I don't care if your grandparents had a potato patch in Ireland or your aunt ran a pub in Dublin. You're not Irish.

Let us for a second pretend that your grandparents, from Ireland, makes you 1/4 Irish. What will your kids with your American wife be? 1/8 Irish? 1/16? 1/32? You've never visited Ireland. You don't know where freaking Ireland is. You are NOT Irish. You are American. You have dark hair and you can't hold down your liqour, so please for the love of GOD stop claiming a certain percentage of a nationality you have essentially nothing to do with.

So might I ask what caused this rant?

EDIT: I have been to Ireland, all but one of my grandparents were born there, technically, I can claim Irish citizenship. I'm ethnically 100% Irish. My hair is brown, gets a fair bit red in the summer, and I have never lost a drinking contest that involved whiskey, so, am I Irish?

I'm Scottish. I was born in Glasgow, and then was brought over here when I was 2. Therefore, I have no accent, no recolection of Scotland, and yet I can still call myself Scottish. 😛

The easiest way to settle this argument: Ireland faces the US in a World Cup final. Who do you support? Who do you support?
