you need to load up on all free or cheap CDR media deals, get her at least two machines linked by KVM with 48x burners, maybe another on the network strictly for downloading. Two burners at that speed gives you 60 seconds to swap and load the new files to burn, shes young so she will be quick enough and be able to work those 20 hour days, sounds like your getting ready to retire, lucky b*stard...

No Intent is not required. Intent only matters in certain circumstances regarding how a crime is classified.

Let me preface by saying I have two daughter's but they're little.
I don't participate in an absolute morality, and will endeavor not to pretend to my children that i do.
I'm certain your daughter is a morally upstanding young lady, and that she does not understand how here actions are wrong OR she has rationalized those actions so that they are either acceptable or not REALLY bad.
That being said, it's not the actual act of piracy you need to correct but the rationalization which allowed her to consider it acceptable behavior. I cannot see how that can be done by punishment alone.

Hehe you somewhat described my setup in high school and college except had 1 PC with 3 scsi burners in there and another just to download. I also had a color inkjet to print out the labels. Going to college was even better for my "business" cause I was linked via multiple T3s. Software, dreamcast games, albums, music compilations I did it all. But I wish I was into computers at age 12 and had the push to do something at that age. You should be a proud father!

Well, I would do one of two things:

1) Buy her a DVDR and tell her the real money is in selling video games to the boys.

2) Email her pretending to be the RIAA (or whatever) and scare her straight.

Obviously she was honest with you when you talked to her about it.... she didnt just tell you what she KNEW you caught her at... but she also told you everything else she was doing. Thats a big thing, she told you about thoose things. That tells me she just didn't know the legal issue of it. You have a very very smart daughter and I'd sure be proud.... I think she just didn't know it was wrong. Some of the things like fixing scratched CDs is perfectly legal and is fine IMO. I think with her being honest with you that you should just talk to her about it, see what she has to say about it more. You've obviously done a pretty good job with her so far, do what you think is good. I'd prob just throw the money in a savings account and talk to her.

take the money and put it in a college fund for her.

Good thing you caught her before someone else did, could've put a damper on her future.

Make her cut checks to the respective artists that are not getting royalties from her CD sales.

I LOVE that idea!
I wonder how much artist make per record/song on the average?

Actually you have a point.

In that case it is keep the money, don't do it anymore.

At $1 dollar per CD (back to the artist) she is doing justice the music industry, now with the current agreement she can continue business as usual 🙂 She is like a modern day robin hood.

Edit: bah just read your reply above me, put it in savings then.

I agree, I really would like to give the money to the bands but the longer I think about it I bet any money sent would get forwarded to their record company anyways who may keep all of it or start asking uncomfortable questions. To me, doing the "right thang" is not worth the potential trouble it could cause EVERYBODY on my end because some prick at Sony wants to make some publicity by going after a twelve year old and her dad.

I really hate it when reality intrudes on ethics.

If that was my daughter I would commend her entrepreneurship but let her know it was illegal.

punishment? take a pair of cutters and snip the internet connection in front of her face... 😀

Anyways, I think I have this worked out. She is sending money to the Artists at the rate of a $1 per song per CD.

That puts her about even on the cash in cash out front.

I rejected the idea of giving the money back to the kids. (Too damn many of them anyways)

I wouldnt send it back.

1) your waving it in their face that she pirated music and you never know what they might do.
2) The artists will never see the money.

Its best just to hang on to it and put it in some kind of account.

i think savings would be a good idea, let her continue to sell them, but she cant spend any of the money on the stuff she wants now, put it all into a savings fund. then again, you could run into her selling illegal copies illegally on the side...lol, not telling you about some of them..."Ya dad, i sold 7 today" but she really sold 10 and she is thinking "just 2 weeks of selling 10 but telling dad[you] 7 I can get some clothes"...which would cause more prolems....aye, just do what you already did 🙂

edit: i know i was rambling, no need to point it out people!

this topic sucks. tell her not to do it again and explain to her why, just like any other naughty thing she does. why make it so friggin complicated? i question your parenting skills if you cant even figure this out.. save your ulcers for when she turns into a teenager next year.
