Well job counselor screwed me and made me false promises that I could go into Airbourne with a certain contract. It turns out that I will never go to airbourne school and will never progress from there to become a ranger. Is there anything I can do to get out of this contract and get a new one that will give me what I need? Any help would be so greatly appreciated. I am shipping out in NOV under this contract and I dont want to be in it if I cant reach my final goal.

I talked to my recruiter and he said changning my MOS is not going to be a problem. Im glad i'm not stuck in that job

Lesson #1 about military recruiters: if it isn't in writing, you aren't going to get it.
(This is often, though not always, true of civilian hiring as well.)

That doesn't excuse the recruiter lying to make a quota. In your shoes I'd be finding out the recruiter's CO and writing a polite, formal letter of complaint about the recruiter's conduct.

As for voiding the contract, I have no idea -- I suspect there is some formal procedure to go through, perhaps in the fine print of the contract that you didn't read carefully enough.

Don't you get a what do you call it? A release that will look bad on anything and everything for the rest of your life if you break your contract?

I already took the oath. I just want to change careers so that I can get into the career i want. If there is any way to get into airbourne from the contract that I have now then that wouuld be fine as well. Im really starting to get worried that I might be doing something for 4 years that im gonna hate.

According to that page, you can say you underwent 'homosexual conduct.'

Now how bad do you REALLY want out?

It really looks like the US wants an all volunteer military.

I'm sure you could apply for Airbourne school and get in if you meet the qualifications. They are always looking for a few good men to jump out a perfectly good airplane.

I really don't see how you can say you will never get in the Airbourne school. What is your MOS?

Go 11B and you'll get into AB I'm sure.

My mos is cav scout 19D1. A friend of mine told me there is no way to get into Airbourne from there. I just dont want to be stuck in that for 4 years. My friend also told me if you dont get airbourne in your contract then its really hard to apply and get it. I also dont know what the qualifications are to get into airborne.

I've heard that it's hard, and I've also heard that it's not that hard. As for qualifications, I believe you have to score significantly higher on your PT (Physical Training) test, with scores of 85 and above for your age group, instead of the standard 60.

One other note: If you're shipping in Nov, you took your DEP oath; you will take another oath when you leave DEP and actually ship. If you do end up getting into Airborne, be advised that Ft. Benning is pretty miserable (in the summer, anyway), and try to not run afoul of Drill Sgt. Shenk, as he's the antichrist.

The military is very tricky, and a "promise" of a MOS doesn't always mean you'll get what you want.

I was USMC Air wing, and I had to sign to 4 years to get that guarantee. (Aviation) As it turned out, I was sharp enough to actually GET what I wanted IE: I was trained as a Jet Engine Mechanic. But there were guys I worked with that had the same guarantee and ended up working in Motor T (motor transport). Since the vehicles were being USED on an airbase, technically they WERE given their guarantee. And as it turned out, even though I got TRAINED to work on Jet engines, due to a typical snafu I was sent to the wrong base and NEVER did do what I was trained for. In the end I wound up being a Plane Capt. (the guys that preflight planes, fuel them, guide them on and off the flight line etc...)

Take anything the recruiters tell you with a grain of salt, and even when you do get in, don't count on ANYTHING.
I love you man. you have just saved me a bunch of hardship.

If you really loved me, you would nominate me for Elite ;)

*cough*fvckingarmy*cough*.

*grin* Now that that's out of the way...;)

I'm not sure if all the services are the same, but i seem to recall hearing that you don't actually officially enter active duty until you step "onto the yellow footprints," meaning, onto the recruit training depot. While you're still in the DEP, you may be able to refuse to ship out unless they guarantee you your MOS in writing. If you're going to do something about it, make sure you do something NOW, not later. Once you're off to boot camp, it's too late.

In the Marine Corps it works a little different. My recruiter was (thankfully) pretty straightforward with me and explained it like this: "You're in this office because you want to be a Marine. That's the only thing i'm going to promise you: get through boot camp and you can be one of us. If you're here because you want to go to college or you want job experience or any of that other bull*&#$, the other services are next door. We don't promise you a rose garden. You will be a Marine rifleman first and foremost, and anything other than that is extra. We'll try to get you into the field of your choice and even get you a bonus if you qualify, but everything is up to the needs of the Marine Corps. If you're willing to take that risk to become a Marine, we'll start the paperwork right now."

actually for the USMC, you can quit anytime until you take the oath again upon entering the basic training. Which is usually after the yellow footprints.

It really looks like the US wants an all volunteer military.

Yes, they do... when I went through boot camp a few months ago I went through *4* separate interviews, each one saying "if you don't want to do this say so now and you're going home, or at least make up something that would make you unfit for the military"

See my previous post about taking 4 interviews. 2 of them were *after* stepping on the yellow footprints.

In order of progression:
1. Recruiter ("if you don't want to be here, say it now")
2. MEPS station "Official" oath ("when we say the oath if you have any reason not to be in the Marines don't say the oath and tell us why and we'll send you home")
3. Yellow footprints (boot camp starts)
4. Individual moment of truth ("if you have any reason to not be here, say it now while we're in private and I am legally obligated to not pass it on to anyone else, and we'll send you home")
5. Mass moment of truth ("if you have any reason not to be here that you didn't say in private, say it now and we'll send you home")
6. You've been given enough chances to say no now... now you're in with no looking back.

Im gonna call my recruiter tomorrow and tell him to to get me airborne in my contract or I cant be in the army. I dont know if he tried to screw me over or was misinformed and just guessed that I could but it willl all be worked out soon. Ill probably be shipping much later than november though which probably means ill have to get a job again.
