with all of their bit torrent crap? puhleeze!

I stripped off almost all non-p2p protocols to utilize the university lan as much as possible so that there would still be overhead atop their bit torrent crap, because otherwise, all of that load on one connection would bring it to its knees

one thing doesn't really add up here....

You hand over YOUR(as in you paid out of your own pocket) network equipment to people you KNOW are computer illiterate and you expected your connection to be unaffected? That's like putting a 10 year old in charge of a jet plane and expecting a smooth flight.

hardware, xincom.

21 downstream, 80, 5190 and all other "protected" services got shot to wan1 (university) whenever the university could take it (read: when it's working... its reliablity sucks, thats the only reason comcast is even here). All non explictly defined services to cable only. my server (permanent trillian, ftp, ventrillo and remote desktop and seti), the ps2 and the xbox to cable only. Worked like a dream. Download accelerator over thanksgiving break was pulling in excess of 2.5 megabytes a second combining university with comcast. I'm lucky to get 180-220 when these schmucks are on... and when they "ran it" it was almost never working anyway

they refused to reason, I had to let them prove their stupidity. unfortunatley, the timing blew as it was the begining of an extended campus exodus and I didn't delete all of my profiles because I'm not a dick.

That's what me and Danman/Cashman did our first year of college. It worked just fine. Whenever the internet was slow, we'd go around the apartment to each person's bedroom and jokingly ask them if they were downloading pr0n. Usually the culprit was too much bittorrent going on at one time.

unfortunatley, I do most of my work by rcon with my server (from the university lan side when im on campus, or from the comcast side when I'm at work) rather than from home so they're not in earshot anyway.... and my roomates would always say things like "BT, what BT?" anyway... even after I start reading off the HUNDREDS of open sessions, ports and IPs from the balancer's logs....

no kidding.... what average apartment in a state school has a load balancer with custom profiles (designed with confidential university packet shaping algo's in hand... I'm the first student employee in network administration in a decade) to perfectly utilize both connections simultaneously AND have an 802.11g WAP, SSID broadcast disabled downlink AND 802.11G bridge to provide connectivity for all of the consoles!??!! There is not one piece of hardware on that network I don't own... I even paid for the wireless bridge out of pocket just to preempt the halo 2 complaining "blah blah we cant get online"

well, now they can suffer through the university lan (only web and aim are somewhat reliable) or deal with dialup- I'm out :)

that network was freaking perfect... and now its all mine again

You get my vote for ATOT member least likely to get laid. But congratulations on fooling yourself that you had some sort of incredible network topology worked out when all you needed was a $69 wireless router from CompUSA.

Right.... wanna bet I get more ass than you even though I my slut and I just broke up a week ago? Oh, and the load balancing owns you. ever get 2.5 megs a second on cable?

yes actually...
4.0 here without the premuim 6 mbit charges...
Roadrunner owns
and i use a 50 dollar Linksys 802.11g router and a POS Dlink PCI card...
AND my xbox works just fine...
so

well, how would you feel if your completley ignorant roomates just started demanding that you hand over your network hardware and then seriosuly fsck with your ability to stay online?

sounds wicked complicated and above and beyond my realm of network knowledge. glad you did this though. its frustrating to see ppl just suck it up when they're taken advantage of.

The university packet shaper won't let xbox through... for one.... and second.... 6megabit service would be over 50-60$ a month from comcast..... I get 3megabits for 6 months at their intro rate of 20 and 40 for the 3 months after that I'll still be at this place... I think I made the best I possibly could with the situation at hand... but are you seriously telling me that you can get 4.0 megaBYTES off of your cable connection? WTH do you live?

megabit != megabyte. when I say 2.5 megabytes a second, I mean 2560 kilobytes a second with full (and badly needed) failover reliability of two independant ISPs.

Now that you have broken free from the rule of everyone in d'apartment, I hope you considering breaking away from them in every other way aside from actually living there because I sense revenge. Revenge is a dish best served cold. Or they will STFU about it and ask you to come back. Will you?

hello. you just proved you don't know what your talking about.

OC-3 = 155.52 Mbps

that isn't bytes, that is in bits
8 bits to 1 byte

divide that by 8 = 19.44 MB/sec

so you are saying you have a 32 Mbps connection from your cable company.

LOL yeah right prove it.

An OC3 Line is appox 155 megaBITS. IE less than 20 megaBYTES per second. You're saying from Time Warner Cable you get 32 megabits a second?

Sorry dude, but you got pwned! See Adul's post above for further reference.

My new roommates don't use the internet, yet still want high speed $$$ :) One downloads off bittorrent for naruto i guess, but me? I'm WOW'ing and CS'ing and downloading, and ahh, the glory of having 99% of the bandwidth for myself.
